Song Of The Day @ 02:05 pm

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: cheerful cheerful
I'm currently hearin: Beatles - Come Together

Today's Selection is...

“Xanax and Wine” from Unreleased And Rare.

An early, or perhaps later version of “Fast Cars”.

I like this song and “Fast Cars” about equally, for different reasons. “Xanax and Wine” has a more “rocking” feel to it, and although it seems a bit more raw than “Fast Cars,” I think that the sound really works for the song. I love the chorus much more than “Fast Cars”s chorus, just because, well, it has more of a chorus. I love the way Bono sings “Xanax, and wiiiiine!” and I like the “Don’t you worry ‘bout your mind” part a lot more in this song, with Edge answering with “’Cause I worry all the time…”

Such a cool song. It's so much fun to sing along to.

EDIT: Thanks to zoostation, the song is now available for download at u2usendit at gmail. The password is vertigou2.

My cell is ringing, no ID
I want to know who's calling
My garden's overgrown
I go out on my belly crawling / (he's crawling)
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news
To get to know the enemy

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is a picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
I take a pill to stop it

Take me, save me from myself
I know that you've been good to me
Now I need you not to be
Wake me, I fear I cannot be asleep
I’m buying things I can't afford
I’m on a high diving board
Oh it's you keeping me dry
Xanax and wine

I'm going nowhere
Where I am it is a lot of fun
They're in the desert to dismantle an atomic bomb
I watch 'em shadow box
Check the stocks, I'm in detox
Want the lot of what you've got
If what you've got can make this stop

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
I take a pill to stop it

Take me, save me from myself
I know that you've been good to me
Now I need you not to be
Wake me, I fear I cannot be asleep
Try not to look so bored
You're buying things you can't afford
I got yours and I know you want mine
Xanax and wine

Don't you worry 'bout your mind
‘Cause I worry all the time
Don't you worry you'll be fine
You should worry about the day
That the pain it goes away
You know I miss mine sometimes

There is no fiction
That will truly fit the situation
I'm documenting every detail
Every conversation
I'm not used to talking to somebody in their body
Somebody in a body, it's somebody in a body
In a body there's somebody
Somebody in a body

Somebody, somebody, somebody
It's somebody... in a body
Somebody... in a body
It's somebody... in a body
There's somebody...

It is better than "Fast Cars" too, I agree. It's much more rockin, especially that intro riff!

I'm uploading the song right now. It should be ready in a few minutes.
:)

Ahhh I love this song. In my Oral Interpretation class we have to pick lyrics to read, as in without music and just read them as if they were lines, and I've decided to use this song. Sometimes I wonder if this song and Native Son were part of the "Punk Rock from Venus" that Bono was talkin about in earlier interviews before the Atomic Bomb was released and they were still working with their first producer.

Oh good, you posted a more correct version of the lyrics than the one that's usually floating around!  I'm sure it's "Wake me, I feel like I've been asleep", though. (I posted my own transcript in my journal a few weeks ago - it's mostly the same as what you've got there, I think.)

This is a great song - like you, I find it hard to say which I prefer out of XAW and Fast Cars. I think Fast Cars definitely works better on the album, it's more polished and has more "character" than XAW. I wasn't too sure about XAW the first time I heard it - I was so used to hearing Fast Cars that the lyrics sounded all wrong against this uptempo rock music!  But it grew on me quickly and I'm really glad we've been able to hear both songs. The major selling point of XAW is of course the unbelievably amazing, jaw-dropping, droolworthy, heart-failure-inducing falsetto that I never dreamed we'd hear in this day and age. I melt every single time I hear that "Xanax and wiiiiiine" - guh, guh, a thousand times guh!

I like the extra lyrics as well, it takes the song off in such a different direction from Fast Cars (not a better one, IMHO, just different). The whole "Taaaake me" chorus is really catchy, it's got a great tune and I love the lyric "I know that you've been good to me / Now I need you not to be". Like you, I also enjoy the more varied lyrics in the "Don't you worry 'bout your mind" section, with Edge and Bono responding to each other rather than just repeating the same line. Oh, and Bono's almost whispered lines at the end of the song are nice!

Plus I just think it's cool that U2 finally came up with a song beginning with X. ;)  I think they're still missing a Q...

It is "I feel like I've been asleep". I just didn't bother changing it. :)

U2 should write a song called "Quince". Like the fruit. Lmfao.

Haha... I would be pleased if the fruit obsession re-surfaced! *g*

It'll more likely be something to do with quarks, I reckon. (Edge's idea, of course - but the dodgy science metaphors will be all Bono's!)

You know, when I got HTDAAB, I had to have the UK version, because I loveeed Fast Cars. I just loved the weird paranoia of the lyrics. And then I was introduced to Xanax And Wine, which had even better lyrics. I like both of them though.
