Does anyone know if there's major differences between the "single versions" of Pop era tunes and the album versions?

I know there's a "12 inch version" of "Discotheque" on that single, and "single versions" of "Please" and "Last Night On Earth." I always just assumed these were edits and never really paid attention to them, but someone told me they're actually remixed and/or partially re-recorded...anyone know if this is true?

I have a single version of Discotheque that's missing the swirling guitar intro that's found on the album version, I have a feeling the single was releasted before the album was done, hence the pictures from the Disotheque video in the actual album jacket.
I know that the single version of Last Night on Earth doesn't have the synthesizers in the intro, it just starts off with bass, and the bridge is different. Not better or worse, I suppose, just different.
Staring at the Sun is the same as far as I know, and Please was incredibly, drastically changed when it was released as a single, and the single version is, I think, one of the best recordings U2 has ever made. I would gladly upload all these songs, but alas I'm on a 56k. Yeah I know, still. :-(

It's okay, I have all those singles, they're just not on my computer. When I moved to Chicago I left about 2,000 CD's at my parents' house until I end up somewhere more permanently, so I just ripped everything onto a 250 gig hard drive, but I didn't include those tracks because I just assumed they were almost identical to the album versions...i'll check them out next time I'm back at their house. Thanks for the info. :)

I prefer the album version of Please. It's a pity too, because I love the video for Please, but everytime I watch it, I keep trying to sing the album version of the song.

Me too. The overall structure/mix of the single version is kind of interesting, more like the live version (which I don't think is really better *or* worse, just different), but it's ruined by the re-recorded vocals which are awful compared to the album version. I've always thought that was a shame.

You didn't mention it so perhaps you already know, but the single version of If God Will Send His Angels also differs from the album version. It's structured differently and has a whole new ending - I like both version equally.

Right...i forgot about that one. I have that single somewhere too. I'll have to give these a listen this week when I'm back at my parents' house for a couple of days. Thanks :)
