Song Of The Day @ 03:06 pm

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: ecstatic ecstatic
I'm currently hearin: Love Rescue Me

Today's Selection is...

“Love Rescue Me” from Rattle and Hum.

Oh, this song is amazing. I love how it starts out so soft and mournful and builds into this shouty song. The lyrics are quite good, and just… wow. I love all of Rattle and Hum so much that it’s nearly impossible to pick a favourite song from it, but this one is definitely up there.

Love rescue me
Come forth and speak to me
Raise me up and don't let me fall
No man is my enemy
My own hands imprison me
Love rescue me

Many strangers have I met
On the road to my regret
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me
They ask me to reveal
The very thoughts they would conceal
Love rescue me

And the sun in the sky
Makes a shadow of you and I
Stretching out as the sun sinks in the sea
I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
I said, love rescue me

In the cold mirror of a glass
I see my reflection pass
See the dark shades of what I used to be
See the purple of her eyes
The scarlet of my lies
Love rescue me

Yeah, though I walk
In the valley of shadow
Yeah, I will fear no evil
I have cursed thy rod and staff
They no longer comfort me
Love rescue me

Sha la la... sha la la la
Sha la la la... ha la la...
Sha la la la... sha la la la
Sha la la la... sha la la
Sha la la la... sha la la la
Sha la la... la la
I said love, love rescue me

I said love
Climb up the mountains, said love
I said love, oh my love on the hill
On the hill of the son
I'm on the eve of a storm
And my word you must believe in love
I said love, rescue me

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah...

Yeah I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
I said love rescue me

I've conquered my past
The future is here at last
I stand at the entrance
To a new world I can see
The ruins to the right of me
Will soon have lost sight of me
Love rescue me

Love Rescue Me seems to be widely disliked over at Interference, so rare is the chance I have to gush about it. I think the lyrics are the best part of it, you can't get much better than the second verse. Rattle and Hum love!

I've only heard this song a couple of times and I have no real recollection of it, except:

I've conquered my past
The future is here at last
I stand at the entrance
To a new world I can see

I used that for my high school graduation quote. :)

I dunno why Rattle & Hum gets shit on so much, it's a brilliant piece of work.

This is a beautiful song and very underrated. I've even seen a few people say they don't like it, and I can't begin to imagine why. It's such a perfect combination of soothing and passionate. Great lyrics, great tune, great vocals, great everything. What's not to love?

I love the way they sing "Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow / Yet I will fear no evil", and I love the "Sha la la la" section. Then the bit where Bono just goes mental is brilliant, even though the lyrics get a bit incomprehensible at this point!  My favourite part of all is the "Oh yeah! Oh yeah!" followed by all that gorgeous impassioned falsetto wailing... it's both pleasing on the ears and great fun to sing along with. :)  Right through to the climactic "I said love... rescue... me-e-eee!". *happy sigh*

I like the little epilogue as well, especially the line "The ruins to the right of me will soon have lost sight of me".

I think we all get SotD ESP, in massive group form. I mentioned before, while giving you Achtung Baby props, that I put a post in my own journal. It was this song! Gah, recreated my text below...

I can adopt many U2 songs as my own. This is one I rarely think of, unless it randomly straggles across my iPod/iTunes. Then I realize how much it is... so me, to be vague. U2 goes Country Western (and I believe there's a difference between that and just plain Country) is certainly not something I could be in to, as a topic. But the slowly strumming guitar, the tumbleweeds and Dust Bowl evoked, with the brass band backing is just perfect for this song. I think the hoarsey screams towards the climax, I can do with out. They belong over in "Hawkmoon 269."
Songs like "One" and "Love Is Blindness" and "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" can get me utterly depressed and through a cathartic weep. With this, I feel like just leaning back and letting the song wash over me. There's no tears, to desparity... just remorse. Remorse and hope, after all the title is a plea to be helped, is it not? But it's not to a lover, or to a friend, but to an idea or a concept. There's no one I could reach out to and say "help me." But the idea of love, the yearning for love, it's something I long for with every fiber of my being. So when this song floats my way, it's a very bittersweet moment... while I'm not where I want to be, there's always something to look for, even if it's just abstract.

Favorite Lines:
Many strangers have I met,
on the road to my regret.
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me.
They ask me to reveal,
the very thoughts they would conceal.
Love... rescue me.
