Need Help @ 07:25 pm

clayboy103177:
My best friend is battling a very bad bout of depression right now. Do any of you have a current mix CD of U2 songs to help through such a trying time? U2 music as you know is the best prescription for situations like these. I will take the most frequently posted songs and put them together on a CD for my friend. Thanks in advance for anyone who responds to this...

Your friend likes U2, right?

Anyway, yeah. Walk On, Drowning Man, 40, One Tree Hill (possibly), One, Stay, Stuck in a Moment, Grace, Always, Sometimes..., City of Blinding Lights, Original of the Species - there's some to start with, anyway.

Hmm...the essentials are

Mercy
Walk On
Stuck in a Moment
The whole Unforgettable Fire album

I say avoid the 90s. We don't need any uncertainty as a guiding light.

If your friend believes in God, most anything October would help, too.

Definitely Love Is Blindness, Wake Up Dead Man and One... those are all songs that I turn to when I'm badly depressed. Perhaps also Acrobat, One Step Closer, Heartland, Walk To The Water, October, Exit, Deep In The Heart, If God Will Send His Angels, Luminous Times, Please, Running To Stand Still, Stay, The Unforgettable Fire, Zooropa...

I also find that First Night In Hell is very good for dark moods, but I'm not sure about the universal appeal of that one.

It's a "remix" of Last Night On Earth, except it bears absolutely no resemblance to LNOE whatsoever. It was a B-side and is totally instrumental. Very dark-sounding.

Can you maybe upload that please? Sounds like something I'd be very interested in hearing! :)

I don't have it on my computer, sorry. :/  Maybe ask in u2usendit?

You'll probably hate it at first - I thought it was just weird for ages. But it's absolutely perfect for a certain kind of mood. I still don't understand in what way it's a remix of Last Night On Earth though!!

one
all i want is you
mkl
bad
a sort of homecoming
love is blindness
one tree hill
in gods country
streets
with or without you
gloria
ultra violet
beautiful day
gone
new york

some of these are sad or melancholy, but the lyrics i find are uplifting and by the end of the song i'm usually feeling more uplifted.

Even if One is my favorite song of all-time, I find it more depressing than helpful, so I'm going against the norm on that one. But here goes...

Drowning Man, New Year's Day, City of Blinding Lights, Beautiful Day, Walk On, Stuck in a Moment, Luminous Times, Some Days Are Better Than Others, Sweetest Thing, Everlasting Love (a cover, I know), Yahweh

Most of these are on a playlist I have in my iTunes called "Walk On" :-D

I'd go with Walk On and Stuck in a Moment. Definitely had a crying breakdown to the latter and felt amazingly lighter after.

There are *so many*, but the first ones that came to my mind were "Bad" and "Running to Stand Still". Those songs can exorcise some pretty painful emotions for me.

Others:
Dark: "Tomorrow", "Acrobat", "Wake Up Dead Man", "Please", "With or Without You", "One", "Drowning Man", "Exit"
Light: "Kite", "Walk On", "The Three Sunrises", "Summer Rain", "Beautiful Day", "If God Will Send His Angels", "Love Ruscue Me", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "MLK", "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)", "Mercy"

Stuck in a Moment really hits me deep whenever Im going through my spells of depression. 40 is really good as well. But whatever you do, please include A Sort of Homecoming. That is the most amazing song.

You are a great person. I wish I had friends like you.

For me, it'd be "Walk On" and I think the overall message of "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own" applies as well.

For starters, all of ATYCLB, especially Walk On
City of Blinding Lights
Bad (live)
Drowning Man
Ultraviolet (Baby, Light My Way)
Stay (Faraway, So Close)
40

An earlier comment said stay away from the 90's 'uncertainty can be a guiding light' stuff, but I disagree. When someone is hurting, a song like With or Without You, and even One to a degree, only helps them wallow.

I remember being depressed and finding great comfort in Zooropa's theme of comfort in chaos. I liked the freedom of the idea that uncertainty could be a guiding light. Ultimately, people pull themselves out of depression, so I don't think the idea of uncertainty needs to be avoided. It is after all, a reality of that state of mind.

Ok, I have depression too so these are just my personal songs that do the most for me. Some of them are less uplifting than others, but I don't agree that certain songs lead someone to wallow or feel worse. For me, I dunno, I can't explain properly, but I don't wallow in my depression. The sad songs help too, because you can identify with them. Sometimes you need to share the dark side and not hide from it, as long as you can see a way out.

Anyway some of mine would include:

Stuck in a Moment (without a doubt, this song gives me hope, esp the last line)
Walk On
Beautiful Day
Lady With the Spinning Head (I find this song weirdly uplifting. I think it's just the music that gets me!)
One (sisters, brothers... It's a song of hope, y'know.)
Wire (not happy, but sometimes you just need to get it out)
Bad
Discotheque (with the boom chas! and watch the vid! Makes me laugh)
Vertigo (oh yeah baby!)
Desire (fun)

That's a few anyway.
