Song Of The Day @ 11:21 am

claudiathefish:
I'm currently feelin: energetic energetic
I'm currently hearin: U2 - Stories For Boys

Today's Selection is...

“Stories For Boys” from Boy.

This song is just so energetic, as most songs from “Boy” are, that you can’t help but love it. Major standouts in this song are, of course, Edge’s guitar riff, and Larry’s drumming. I love the “Ooo”s before the last chorus, and how the song just builds and builds until it just… ends suddenly.

There's a place I go
When I am far away
There's a TV show
And I can grow

Sometimes the hero takes me
Sometimes I don't let go
Hello hello

There's a picture book
With coloured photographs
There's a comic strip
That makes me laugh

Sometimes the lady takes me
Sometimes I don't let go
Hello hello

Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys

There's a place I go
And it's a part of me
There's a radio
And I will crawl

Sometimes the hero takes me
Sometimes I don't let go
Hello hello

Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys

An irresistibly catchy song!  It'd probably be somewhere near the middle if I had to rank the tracks from Boy in order of preference - it's not as lyrically sophisticated as some of the others, but it's still bloody good. :D

As you've said, the guitar and the drums are the most impressive elements here. I adore the intro - that little burst of mischievous (and slightly menacing) guitar, followed by Larry absolutely drumming his arms off, and then all those brilliant guitar riffs. I think it's impossible to listen to this song without tapping your feet, moving your shoulders or something similar!  It's just *fun*, a great little tune.

I like Edge's "Ohh ohh ohh ohh" backing vocals over the chorus, and the repeating of "Stories for boyyys" up until the big dramatic finish. (I slightly prefer the way they end it in the live version that was on the Sweetest Thing single, though - shouting the final "Stories for BOYS! BOYS! BOYS!" rather than having the vocals just kind of trail out.)

Incidentally, I like the way they included a snippet of Stories For Boys during the bridge of Vertigo on the recent tour. They didn't do it at the European shows (at least, not at the ones I attended), but I've seen a clip from the Chicago DVD thingy and it worked surprisingly well. "Sometimes the hero takes me, sometimes I can't let go... hello hello, HELLO HELLO!" - and Vertigo crashes back in. Really cool!

The entire album is amazing but I really do love this song.

"Boy" was in my "first day at sea" soundtrack. Hehe!
