Song of the Day

Today's selection....

"When I Look At The World" from All That You Can't Leave Behind

In a canon of any particular musician's work, we'd have to agree 90% of their songs are about love in some form, more specifically about their significant other.  But with U2, Bono's dedications to Ali seem rather limited for a band so epic.  Maybe they like it better that way.
This is one of them, though.  Bono is a man also known for his charitable efforts towards third world countries.  Ali is apparently threefold charitable, spending time in areas that could threaten her life (Chernobyl).  But no matter how optimistic or positive any of us are, there come times of helplessness, futility and seeing the world as a vile, loathsome place.  So, if you can think of Bono in that mindset, this song is from that POV, when he's envious of Ali's stance, which seems to be more positive than his own.  I have to agree with Bono, usually, when he states "... the world is a really unfair and often wicked place and beauty is just a consolation prize."  It's almost as if those moments of wonder and beauty are just a distraction from all the evil.  Still, there are those of us that try our hardest to see the best in everyone, and when we can't, we long to be like those who can.

There are many a song that scare me off from their opening... noises, I'll call them.  Running to Stand Still, WGRYWH, and this one.  I just don't care for that opening guitar (I think).  So... today's trivia can be who knows what effect is being used on the intro?  But of course, I don't have that answer.  Discuss amongst yourselves. ;-)  Other than that, the lyric-o-meter is on the positive side today, even if I don't care for the guitar (and I consider myself an Edger).  My favorite lyrics are going to be something else, but I love the way Bono tries to wail on "I can't waaaait any longer / I can't waaaaait 'til I'm stronger."  And the closing line/question is infinitely sad, but a question we can't all help but ask ourselves at times.

When I Look At The World

When you look at the world
What is it that you see?
People find all kinds of things
That bring them to their knees
I see an expression
So clear and so true
That changes the atmosphere
When you walk (in)to the room

So I try to be like you
Try to feel it like you do
But without you it’s no use
I can’t see what you see
When I look at the world

When the night is someone else's
And you’re trying to get some sleep
When your thoughts are too expensive
To ever wanna keep

When there’s all kinds of chaos
And everyone is walking lame
You don’t even blink now do you
Or even look away

So I try to be like you
Try to feel it like you do
But without you it’s no use
I can’t see what you see
When I look at the world

I can’t wait any longer
I can’t wait 'til i’m stronger
Can’t wait any longer
To see what you see
When I look at the world

I’m in the waiting room
I can’t see through smoke
I think of you and your holy book
When the rest of us choke

Tell me, tell me, what do you see?
Tell me, tell me, what's wrong with me?

Fave Lyric:
When the night is someone else's
and you're trying to get some sleep.
When your thoughts are too expensive
to ever wanna keep.
