Song of the Day @ 12:59 pm

zoostation:
I'm currently feelin: rushed rushed
I'm currently hearin: I Threw a Brick Through a Window

Today's Selection is...

"I Threw a Brick Through a Window" from October

Image hosted by Photobucket.comIn all honesty, right this second is the first time I hear this song. ::puts on repeat:: The beginning of the song reminds me a lot of "Seconds" for some reason. I absolutely love Edge in this song. Specifically during the "I was walking into walls" part. Otherwise, the drumming is great in this song. The instrumental break in the song is amazing too. With Edge doing that bouncy thing on guitar and Larry keeping the rhythm at just the right volume. Is it me, or is this a standout from the dull (muahaha, I said it again) October? It sounds like it should belong in War.

// I Threw a Brick Through a Window

I was talking
I was talking to myself
Somebody else
Talk talk talking
I couldn't hear a word
A word you said

He was my brother, brother
I said there was no other
Way out of here
Be my brother, brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out

I was walking
I was walking into walls
I'm back again
I just keep walking
I walk into a window
To see myself
And my reflection
When I thought about it
My direction
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

No one... no one is blinder
Than he who will not see
No one... no one is blinder
Than me

I was talking
I was talking in my sleep
I can't stop talk, talk, talking
I'm talking to you
It's up to you

Be my brother, brother
There is another way out of here
In my brother, brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out
Gotta get out of here

Next to Tomorrow, this is the October song I most want to sing along to. This can be hazardous to bystanders, but I don’t care. Great song. It’s about being spiritually lost, on the surface, but what it’s REALLY about is seriously stretching your voice to reach an inhuman pitch. Instrumentally, it belongs in it's era, though they all leave their own marks on this track. Larry's mark isn't so subtle. His drumming stands out more here than anywhere else on the album.

Best verse:

No one... no one is blinder
Than he who will not see
No one... no one is blinder
Than me

I think that's why I said it sounded like it would belong in War. Maybe it was a leftover. :)

I think this song is very typical of October, rather than standing out in any way. It's not unpleasant, but somehow it's missing something... there's just a weird feel to it?

Anyway, to focus on the good aspects of the song:

~ It's very catchy, you can't help but sing along, and it sticks in your head.

~ The lyrics seemed very meaningful to me a couple of years ago when I was stuck in an unhappy situation. I found myself with the "Gotta get out, gotta get out, gotta get out of here" line running through my head, and then I realised some of the other lines were relevant as well (though I can't entirely remember how). I can often relate to "My direction... going nowhere, going nowhere".

~ I absolutely love these lines:
"No-one... no-one is blinder
Than he who will not see.
No-one... no-one is blinder
Than me.
"
Genius. And I love the way Bono sings that bit.

~ You're right about the drumming, it's impressive, and the guitar riff is quite striking as well. I hadn't actually noticed just how good the drumming is, until I listened properly a minute ago. One day maybe I'll get there with this album... it's the slowest grower of them all!
