Today’s Selection is...

“Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (Temple Bar Mix)” from the WGRYWH Single

When I reviewed the original song the first time around, I said it might possibly be my most favorite U2 song of all time. Now I can confidently say: This is my most favorite U2 song of all time.
This remix of my most favorite song also happens to be one of my most favorite remixes of a U2 song. I’ll stop typing ‘most favorite’ now.
Image hosted by Photobucket.comI can’t even say what’s different about it. I think there’s a piano involved, maybe a tambourine? Extra drums? All I know is that the mix is ten times better than the “Temple Bar Edit” which butchers the song and tries to reconstruct it in the worst way ever. If I’m not mistaken, the "Don't Turn Around" part is removed from it. But with the Mix, the song remains exactly how it was originally made, only it’s ‘most favoritely better.’
Intersetingly, I was toiling between doing this song and another this morning and was waiting for a deciding factor. On shuffle, with speakers blasting in my car, this exact song came out.
Mysterious Ways, indeed.

// Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (Temple Bar Mix)

You're dangerous 'cos you're honest
You're dangerous, you don't know what you want
Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot
For any spirit to haunt

Hey hey, sha la la
Hey hey...

You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left there on a beach
Well you tell me things I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach

Hey hey, sha la la
Hey hey, sha la la

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?

Well you stole it
'Cos I needed the cash
And you killed it
'Cos I wanted revenge
Well you lied to me
'Cos I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends?

Hey hey, sha la la
Hey hey, sha la la

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?

Oh, the deeper I spin
Oh, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heavens wide rows
The doors you open
I just can't close

Don't turn around
Don't you turn around again
Don't turn around
You gypsy heart
Don't turn around
Don't turn around again
Don't turn around
And don't look back
Come on now love
Don't you look back

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna taste your salt water kisses?
Who's gonna take the place of me?

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who could tame the heart of thee?

What version is the Temple Mix? Not the same one used for the video, right?

Have I mentioned, I really like the awards you give out. It makes me listen to the tracks over and pay attention to the drums/bass/guitar/vocal.

Aww thanks for that. I thought that all these 3 months, nobody cared and thought they were an eyesore on their friends page.
:)

You've made my day 15% better.

I'm pretty sure the one on the video is the Temple Bar Remix, so you will have heard it before!

I think it's a tie between Larry and Adam on that one. Don't they just work magic togather?

I honestly don't know why I selected Larry to be the recipient. Maybe it's because I've been having a "Larry" day, air drumming in the car, tapping my fingers on a bench in rhythm to the music...
I think everyone in this song is pure genius.

Larry wins cause...he's Larry.

The Temple Bar Edit is indeed a bit rubbish. It scraps the entire middle section ("Oh, the deeper I spin..." etc), jumping straight to "Come on now love, don't you look back!". And instead of repeating the chorus at the end, it THEN goes into "Don't turn around, don't turn around again..." and fades out with that. Meh. It *kind* of works, to redesign the song as a shorter radio-friendly single, but it's far less effective than the full-length version with everything in the right order.

But yes, the Temple Bar Remix is glorious!  I wouldn't say I totally *prefer* it to the album version, as I love the extended intro on the album, and the atmospheric quality it has. But the remix is at least equally good, for sure. The piano is new, as is the rough-sounding guitar riff that runs all the way through - it's a whole different feel, and makes the song sound "clearer" and more upbeat. The great thing about the Temple Bar Remix is that it takes the best parts of the Temple Bar Edit (i.e. these musical additions) and the best thing about the album version (i.e. the structure of the song), and blends them together into some kind of giant super-mix. :p  They've also added some dramatic strings to emphasise the "Don't you look back" climax... nice!

My favourite part of the remix is that beautiful pulsating sound that's added to the middle section, it makes it more ethereal and other-worldly than ever. The nitpicky side of me also likes the fact Bono sings "Who could tame the heart of thee?" in this version, because that's the line that was printed in the lyrics booklet of Achtung Baby, but he actually sang "Who's gonna tame the heart of thee?" on the album. It's just one of those little things that bugs me, like when he forgets to sing "concrete" in New York. ;p
