sirensong984:
Song of the Day

Hello, I'm the new Sunday/Monday Song of the Dayer. Today's edition is a little late, due to my part fouling up when I was supposed to start, but it's all taken care of.

Let me introduce myself in "U2 terms" and personal terms as well. I'm (almost, so very close to being) 21, I am a junior in college (political science major, religious studies minor) and have always lived in Tennessee. I became a U2 fan back in '97 when my Grandmother forced me into going to see a Popmart show. Since then I've been running off seeing them in all kinds of places. My last show was this tour--Chicago. My next one is Atlanta.

Anywho

Today's selection is..

A Celebration

Commercially released in March of 1982 but never made it to an album. This is one of my favorite U2 songs, though I've never been a big fan of the earlier things like I have been the 90s things, just because it appeals to me more. I do love early things, I just have my preferences. Anyhow, my favorite part of this song is the "And you..can GO! GO! GO!" part, though I find these lyrics pretty clever all together. Larry gets some mean drumming in, also!

Have you seen the video for this? Bono's red pants, running up and down a spiral staircase, it's great.

My latest observation on this song? The line "...I believe in the atomic bomb" Very interesting, considering the latest release. :) It's almost like a precursor of something they'd never dreamed of. Similar to the Stories for Boys reference in Vertigo.

Shake, shake

Don't go
I believe in a celebration
I believe you set me free
I believe you can loose these chains
I believe you can dance with me
Dance with me

Shake, shake
Shake, shake

I believe in the third world war
I believe in the atomic bomb
I believe in the powers that be
But they won't overpower me

And, and you can go there too
And, and you can go go go go

Shake, shake
Shake, shake

And we dance out of time / Time
And everything goes 'round and 'round
And we don't have the time
To watch the world go tumbling down

Gotta go
I believe in the bells of Christchurch
Ringing for this land
I believe in the cells of Mount Joy
Does an honest man? / Go go go go

And, and you can go there too
And, and you can go go go go

I believe in the walls of Jericho / And you
I believe they're coming down / Can go there too
I belive in this city's children / And you
I believe the trumpet's sound / Go go go go

And, and you can go there too
And, and you can go go go go

I believe in what I'm doing / And you
What am I doing here? / Can go there...

I just realized the atomic bomb reference made in "Seconds" today when I was browsing through lyrics. So it's really funny that you mentioned this today!

(Hi. I'll be the person who always comments a week later because of her stupid schedule!)

What an excellent choice for your SOTD debut. I. Love. This. Song. It's a shame it never made it onto an album, because it means I tend to forget it's there. Though in a way that keeps it exciting for when I do remember to listen to it!

Definitely one of their most energetic and danceable songs, and one of their best early tracks. It seems like the ideal candidate to be revived for the current tour (especially with that Atomic Bomb line!), yet unless I'm mistaken, they haven't played this one yet. I hope they do... especially if I'm there to hear it!

I can't believe how few people commented on this track. Just goes to show how criminally underrated (unknown!) it is.

My favourite bit is definitely "And you... can go there too!  And you... can GO GO GO GO! - Shake! - Shake!"  It's so indescribably catchy, with passionate vocals and little pauses in all the right places. Love the drums and the guitar riff as well. And I like particularly like the line "I believe in the powers that be / But they won't overpower me". (The "bells of Christchurch" line just kind of makes me laugh, because I live right next to a town called Christchurch and it's weird to hear it seemingly namechecked in a U2 song!)

The video is hilarious - Bono with his ridiculous skunk hair and bright red jeans, being typically OTT in his youthful enthusiasm!  There's something really funny about the way Larry crashes into the camera as well. *g*
