Hello Hello!!

September 24th, 2005

Dear older brother, thank you for being a U2 fan when I was a kid. @ 04:07 pm

I'm currently hearin: Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car ~ U2

**screams**

Okay. I haven't been a U2 fan all that long. Under a year, in fact. Yes, I jumped on the Vertigo bandwagon. But I can remember Zooropa from my childhood. I was eight years old in 1993. I remember loving the video for Numb because it was just so freaking weird. My older brother was 14, and a bit of a U2 fan at the time. After I got into U2, I remembered that he'd had Zooropa on cassette tape, but I didn't really remember anything else. When I asked him about it, he told me he'd also had a U2 shirt. I didn't remember the shirt at all, but he told me it had the band on the front and the ZooTV Europe dates on the back. Of course, there was no telling where that shirt might've ended up, so I didn't think about it much.

Now, a couple of years ago, my parents moved out of the house my siblings and I grew up in. But they still own it, it's just in rather bad condition, and for the moment is being used for nothing more than storage. Today, my mother decided to take a trek over there and pick up some things. While in the attic digging through some stuff, what should she happen to find, but my brother's ZooTV shirt.

Now, when she got back, she had a bag of stuff, and she kept saying she wanted to show me something, but I really wasn't interested. She kept pulling out boring stuff, and then finally she pulls out this shirt. At first all I could see of it was that it was black with a colourful screen on the front. And then I recognized what it was and screamed and grabbed it from her and jumped up and down a bit.

It's really filthy though, because it'd been in that attic for who knows how long. So the first thing on my agenda right now is to get it washed. But SQUEE! I can't believe she found it! The front has this picture of the band (only not cropped down so much) and it's all purple and yellow, with a rainbowriffic background, and a star above them with U2 inside it and "Zoo TV Tour - Zooropa '93" in a circle around it. The back has "Zooropa '93" across the top in blue, with all of the European tour dates in white with a silver star in the background.

Im missing a Discotheque tshirt, maybe your mom should come over to my house.

Also, Ive never "met" anyone who has become a U2 fan through Vertigo yet. How fun.

Well, Vertigo made me notice them. The SNL performance made me totally in awe of them. And a friend sending me 6 tracks from HTDAAB when I asked her to send me SYCMIOYO cemented the deal. Then I bought the CD and went crazy finding every U2 song I could recall from my childhood, and then the ones my mom could remember from the 80s. And it just grew like a terrible (but oh so nice) fungus from there.

Isn't it the best that our favorite band has vintage stuff to go searching for?

That's fantastic!

My mom actually gave me a similar U2 shirt for my birthday when I was 13 (I was 13 in 1993), and that was pretty much the height of my U2 obsession.

Your story, however, reminds me very much of my first U2 encounter, because I too was 8, and one of my classmates had a U2 Rattle & Hum shirt, and I remember some of my friends asking him if he was going to go see "U2", and he said, "yeah, me and my mom went to see the movie".

So for a few years, I thought U2: Rattle & Hum was the name of a movie!

Of course, when I turned 12, my world was turned upside down with Achtung Baby. I remember when they released Zooropa, and it was the Best Thing Ever. Still is :)
