Hello Hello!!

Track-by-track comparisons: #1 @ 10:06 pm

canadanne:
Just for fun...

OK, this is gonna be the first in a series of polls (probably one per day) comparing tracks across the 11 studio albums. Today you have to decide which U2 album has the best track #1.

Try and pick the one you think is the best *song* in its own right, rather than considering how well it opens that particular album.

Poll #577211 Best track #1

What's the best track #1 on a U2 album?

I Will Follow
14(7.6%)
Gloria
4(2.2%)
Sunday Bloody Sunday
18(9.8%)
A Sort Of Homecoming
11(6.0%)
Where The Streets Have No Name
80(43.5%)
Helter Skelter
2(1.1%)
Zoo Station
19(10.3%)
Zooropa
4(2.2%)
Discotheque
4(2.2%)
Beautiful Day
22(12.0%)
Vertigo
6(3.3%)
If you're struggling to decide which is the best, go for the one that has the greatest effect on you personally. Feel free to justify your decision in the comments if you also wanted to pick several others!

Where The Streets Have No Name. The single best song ever recorded.

I was torn between that and Zoo Station. With Gloria a close third. I chose Streets.

If I had to pick a second, I'd be torn between Gloria, A Sort Of Homecoming, and Zooropa.

But nothing can compete with Streets in my books.

My gut reaction choice was Zoo Station, and then I was surprised that I didn't pick Streets, which is my all-time favorite song.

As a lead-off track, however, Zoo Station sets up the album perfectly. The distorted guitar makes you think, "Wait ... is this U2?" The perfect song to introduce their latest masterpiece.

I went for Streets, for the live effect. The red, the intro, the big blast of white light - once I'd experienced it live I never listened to it the same way again. Blows me away every time!

I picked WTSHNN because it is indeed the best song on the list--but sometimes I consider that song so good and so out of league with any other song, that I can't include it in lists like this! :) So, if WTSHNN was not included in the list..I would pick...DISCOTHEQUE :)

Heh, I'm being controversial and choosing Vertigo. I LOVE that song. It makes you sit up and pay attention, and I think for a band of their age that's a brilliant song to come out with. And it's a fab opener! It means a lot to me too, personally, and I just love it, it always cheers me up.

Out of the others, Streets, Homecoming and of course Zoo Station (because AB is genius and my fave thing ever). But I'm less in love with Streets than everyone else! I do love it, just... not as much as other songs. :D

I had to go with Sunday Bloody Sunday. The song just has such a powerful meaning. It's really beautiful. :)

I strongly object to having "Helter Skelter" labeled a U2 song. I know it technically opens R&H, but... never mind. Can R&H really be called a studio album, anyway?

Controversial opinion, but it's just that, an opinion

The reason I picked that song is because I LOVE most of the songs, so before even finihinig reading the entry, I decided to go with the one that has the most effect on me.
Every time I hear "Helter Skelter", I get really excited and eager to listen to the rest of R&H. Their version makes me want to get up and DO SOMETHING.
None of the rest really have the same effect as album openers since I see them as more stand along songs, and not true album openers. (Though "Zoo Station" does have a similar effect on me, but not to the extent of "Helter Skelter".)

A Sort Of Homecoming is not just the greatest song to open an album, but the greatest U2 song ever.

Since the rule was to pick the best song, I picked Streets, but as far as which song is the best opener, I would have to say Zoo Station.

Best #1 song for a U2 album...

(Link)
This is not fair! You can't pit one great U2 song against another. Many of these can be the best for its own reason... For example:

After all Where The Streets Have No Name is one of the band's most popular. Vertigo is the beginning of a great album. Beautiful Day was the start of new era for them. Discotheque is the opening for a very controversial album to many. Sunday Bloody Sunday starts one of the best selling albums worldwide for U2. There is also Gloria which is on a album that many people forget except for die hard fans like me (and many of you). I Will Follow began the wonderfulness that we know as U2! ...and so on!

As far as my pick it was a close race but tie goes to the song that has more history to me personally. It was a tight race between Where The Streets Have No Name and Sunday Bloody Sunday!

I let my personal winner be: Sunday Bloody Sunday! :)

I didn't look at the results until after I voted, but I voted with a majority, Where the Streets Have No Name.

It pains me that I Will Follow has only 13 votes (12 before I cast my ballot). Streets is a great song, but it doesn't deserve nearly half the vote, IMHO of course.
