Someone scans the barcode on your ticket, and a computer screen either says "VERTIGO" (which means you go to the ellipse) or "Proceed to floor." It's random-but-not-random -- there is a formula that is set by the tour director, and it randomises the scanning. There is no pattern tho. It's not like every tenth person scans for the ellipse.

If you do get scanned, you get to take someone with you into the ellipse, so if you're with a friend, the two of you have twice the chance of being scanned. It gets iffy with groups of three or more. Sometimes, U2's security let a third person in (this happened to me once), but it doesn't always happen. It really depends on who is overseeing the scan at the time and, it seems, what the gender of the left-out person is. I watched the scans in Anaheim whilst waiting for a friend, and if the left-behind person was a girl, the chances of security waving in a threesome was much greater than if the left-behind person was a guy (this happened to me in San Diego...the lone guy in our threesome was not given a wristband). This letting-a-third-person in may have changed. I heard that they tightened up on it a lot as the first leg progressed, and what little I've heard about the third leg hasn't been very encouraging.
