It's not exactly random. I went GA to all four Toronto shows, and was scanned into the ellipse on the first night. I was outside on the rail (Edge's side) the second night. On the third night, we were again outside on the rail (Adam's side), but we had these really obnoxious groupies behind us, determined not only to get onstage with Bono, but to get *backstage*. Anyway, before the concert even started, they were elbowing us in the back, and so on, so we decided to gamble and leave the rail as we heard that members of the U2 staff were coming out after U2 had taken the stage and were handing out extra wristbands to get into the ellipse. It paid off for us, and we ended up in the ellipse again, but as we were waiting for the staff member, we decided to go see what was happening around the tables with the scanners.

What we observed there was that the number of people getting into the ellipse near the back of the line was significantly higher than it had been for those at the front of the line. Near the front, it was somewhere between 1/15 and 1/20 getting in (on average), but near the back it seemed to be that every second or third person was getting in.

Also, staff were allowing people with children into the ellipse without scanning, so it's not random at all, by my observation.

As for taking in another person, I basically ditto what ladyclayton said. We were in a group of three on the night we got into the ellipse, and security seemed fine with allowing groups of three.

But yes, if you want a great spot, either inside or outside of the ellipse, you're going to have to line up. Although, the second time we were in the ellipse, we were in the back of it, and it was still great. :D

You'll have a wonderful time regardless!
