Hello Hello!!

Track-by-track comparisons: #9 @ 10:12 pm

canadanne:
I'm currently feelin: confused confused

Whoa - Mysterious Ways had an even bigger majority than Bad and Streets in yesterday's poll!  I guessed it would probably win, but I hadn't anticipated such a landslide. Distant second was Crumbs From Your Table.

Today's poll asks you to pick your divine nine. :p

Poll #582478 Best track #9

What's the best track #9 on a U2 album?

Another Time, Another Place
1(0.5%)
Stranger In A Strange Land
2(1.0%)
Surrender
7(3.7%)
Elvis Presley And America
4(2.1%)
One Tree Hill
48(25.1%)
Pride (In The Name Of Love) (live)
50(26.2%)
Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World
29(15.2%)
Dirty Day
16(8.4%)
The Playboy Mansion
4(2.1%)
When I Look At The World
22(11.5%)
One Step Closer

I have been agonising over this one literally all evening. By far the most difficult one yet!!

So I came up with this shortlist of Another Time Another Place, One Tree Hill, TTTYAATW and Dirty Day. And... I absolutely could *not* figure out how to choose one of them. No matter which way I looked at it, none of them were easily eliminated and none of them stood out as obviously better than the others. I must have changed my mind at least half a dozen times! *tears hair out*

With much pain, I somehow decided it was out of Another Time, Another Place and One Tree Hill. (I tried imagining they were all on the same album and guessing which ones I'd look forward to hearing the most!)  And still I could not pick one over the other. I just don't know how to compare them, I love singing them both. :/

A big part of me really wants to support the brilliant Boy track just because I don't expect it'll do very well against the Joshua Tree juggernaut. But putting the gun against my head and being absolutely brutal about it.... as much as I love belting out "We liiie on a cloud, we liiiiie!", I don't think that song has a climax that's quite on the same level as "And when it's raaaiiining, raining haaard, that's when the raaaiiin will breeaaak my heeaaart!". So I'm gonna give One Tree Hill the edge, even though I'll probably regret it later!

I dunno why this all seems so desperately important. *g*

I went for "One Tree Hill" as well.

This was definitely the easiest one so far. Nothing could hold a candle to One Tree Hill unless its name is Streets, Bad, or Unforgettable Fire. And maybe if it's COBL, Heartland, 11 O'clock Tick Tock, or New Year's Day.

And live? One Tree Hill, 26 December 1989 tops the lots.

I love this song so much. Maybe it's got something to do with the fact I'm a New Zealander. ;)

It might be a minor reason, but we both now it's the best song ever, with consideration to the said songs, and of course "Pink Frost."

Pride's winning. Screw me in the eye.

Nothing here compares to One Tree Hill, I have to say. Not even close.

I do have a secret love for TTTYAATW, though...

I'm going to have to think on this and come back later. Surrender is my favorite song from War, but then again One Tree Hill is just so darned good. Then there's Dirty Day which makes me feel the dark, frustrated emotion that I assume inspired it ("you can't even remember what I'm trying to forget") and which I sing to myself at the end of a bad day to help vent.

Blast - these choices just aren't getting any easier. Every day I think, "Today's poll is hard, but tomorrow should be a piece of cake", but then tomorrow comes and it's hard, too.

Grrrr!

Yeah, that's the line that was putting me off eliminating Dirty Day from my shortlist... it's such a good lyric!

I know what you mean about each new poll being just as hard, too. I keep being surprised by how tough they are to pick!

The reason I found it hard was because none of them is really an absolute fave of mine. I suppose on a shortlist I'd have One Tree Hill, TTTYAATW and When I Look At The World, but in the end I had to go for my AB track, because I really do love it and it's the calm before another storm on that amazing album. And it always makes me think of Larry for some weird reason I can't explain. *shrug* So there you go, lol!

That's exactly the problem I had, too. I could see four songs that I really love, but none of them were among my absolute *favourites*, so none of them stood out above the others. So bloody difficult to choose!!

Tryin' to Throw... is so personal to me, so I had to go that way...though One Tree Hill is hard to pass on.

I am shocked that 'Pride' is winning this. Are you kidding me? For me, it was between 'One Tree Hill' and When I Look At the World'. How anyone could choose 'Pride' AGAIN over these other great tracks is unbelievable.

I dunno. I used to love Pride, but over the years I've grown so unbelievably sick of it that I can't believe people still love it this much. It boggles my mind ;) But, of course, it's just my opinion...

Additionally, my best friend/roommate dark_scale and I have had the most wonderful time arguing over songs since this whole Best Track poll started. We love it :)

People vote for what they know, hence Pride.

However, almost all my favourite overlooked tracks appear to be track 9...

One Tree Hill is just timeless U2.

Dirty Day is such emotionally, sexy, bittersweet U2, circa the time I was in a deep U2 obseession.

Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around the World... who can forget that a woman needs a man, like Clayton needs a handycam? It's nostalgic for me... Achtung Baby is my favourite album of all time, by U2, or any band.

When I Look At the World - such a touching surprise at the end of a in excellent come back album.

Surrender reminds me of when I first got into U2, literally, randomly scanning through the rock radio stations in 1992 or 1993, hoping to find something that sounds like U2 so that I could tape it and play it back, guessing what song it was and what album it was. I taped Surrender on an old cassette on a crackly radio, and the haunting bridge in the song with Edge's haunting guitar, and Bono... "Tooonigggght!!!... oh, the city's a light, a passionate flame, that knows me by name". Such RAW U2... I LOVE it!

Elvis Presley & America is so unlike anything else... but sentimental, soft and yet raw... an essential mood builder for The Unfogettable Fire.

How can I rate these all if they all mean so much?

Pride.

There was nothing more emotional than Bono's story about how Adam stepped in front of him when there was a gun threat on his life. It gives the song a deeper admirable meaning to it. What more in the name of love?

That story had me sobbing so hard...there is nothing like a friend who would take a bullet for you..I believe that whole band loves one another that much. That is why their music is strong and endures, because there is unity in it...

It is going to be running through my head for the rest of the night, which makes me a happy happy girl:-)

‘When I Look At The World’ and ‘One Tree Hill’ are going strong, so I’m content with the voting. Let’s see if the gap can close a little bit.

Got to go with Surrender, myself...

Sadie said she couldn't work out
What it was all about
And so she let go
Now Sadie's on the street
And the people she meets you know
She tried to be a good girl and a good wife
Raise a good family
Lead a good life
It's not good enough

Don't know these songs so well and too lazy to actually listen to them all... so I chose the "Achtung Baby" track "TTTYAATW."

This poll just makes me want to listen through all my U2 CDs again... not that that's a bad thing. :P
