Hello Hello!!

October 6th, 2005

Track-by-track comparisons: #12 @ 09:02 pm

canadanne:
Acrobat blew the competition away in yesterday's poll. Please came second, followed by Yahweh and Mothers Of The Disappeared.

A handful of albums stretch to twelve tracks... but which song is the best?

Poll #584571 Best track #12

What's the best track #12 on a U2 album?

When Loves Comes To Town
28(14.3%)
Love Is Blindness
89(45.4%)
Wake Up Dead Man
20(10.2%)
The Ground Beneath Her Feet
33(16.8%)
Fast Cars
26(13.3%)
That's the last poll of the series - for tracks 13 to 17, Rattle & Hum wins by default. ;p  Tomorrow I'll do a round-up of all the results and then we'll have a "Champion of Champions" kind of vote...

Mrrrrh. As much as I love Fast Cars, and as beautifully haunting as TGBHF is, and as perfect Wake Up Dead Man is for my depressed moods....

It just has to be Love Is Blindness. Which I love, and is beautifully haunting, and is perfect for my depressed moods - all in one.

Love Is Blindness, because everytime I listen to it, there's a certain spot where I always painfully cry out "Edgeeeeeee!" ;_;

Had to go for Wake Up Dead Man because the lyrics are just so freakin' brilliant.

Listen as hope and peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time

If we were talking about live versions, it would be no contest because of Edge's mind-blowing solo for Love is Blindness on Zoo TV.

All those songs are really special and really gorgeous.

But Love is Blindness wins this one. On the heartbreaking. Because it always makes my heart break in thousand pieces when I hear it.

Wake Up Dead Man....

Jesus, Jesus help me
I'm alone in this world
And a fucked up world it is too
Tell me, tell me the story
The one about eternity
And the way it's all gonna be

...LOVE this song.

Love Is Blindness, of course. Without a single shadow of a doubt. I even have a quote dug up for it from the Into The Heart book:

"The Edge plays a mournful, ejaculatory guitar solo, stabbing out thick emotional blues notes that linger and then fall away like tears. "A more eloquent prayer than anything I could say," Bono reflects.

And then darkness falls."

*sigh* Utterly gorgeous.

Wow. It's been ages since I picked up that book, so I don't remember reading that quote. Wow.

I read it the other day and it brought a lump to my throat, what Bono said. The song is just so incredible, isn't it?

I knew "Love is Blindness" didn't need my vote, so I went with "Fast Cars" because it's such a catchy little bonus track on "HTDAAB." No deep thoughts for my choice. :P

Well, this was the toughest one for me. Love Is Blindness, Wake Up Dead Man, and The Ground Beneath Her Feet are all equals in the amazing songs category. I initially ruled out TGBHF as it's not U2's lyrics - and even if they were, I would slightly give the nod to the other two anyway.

Now LIB and WUDM is tough, but two things caused me to vote for WUDM:
1. The extremely personal and quite frankly brilliant lyrics. A heavy dose of honesty.
2. The music. The depth of WUDM is incredible - they put so much work into this! Besides all the TV samples, the entirety of Van Diemen's Land is hidden beneath the surface! That kind of effort deserves to be rewarded.

I'd also like to say that I feel these polls would've been better if we'd only voted on the studio versions of RAH, which would've meant all nine studio songs would've been available to be voted on.

Love is Blindness, simply because (other than "When Love Comes to Town") it's the only song on the list that I know. Aren't I sad?

"...for tracks 13 to 17, Rattle & Hum wins by default."

Aren't we forgetting something? Japanese imports need voted on, too! Although I've never heard it, I know the Japanese version of 'Pop' has a 13th track.

This was pretty difficult. I love all of them (except TGBHF, which is OK). In the end, it was a tie between Wake Up, Dead Man and Love is Blindness. Went with Love is Blindness, in the end.

Although come to think of it, I probably should have voted for Wake Up, Dead Man since I hadn't chosen POP once during these polls. Ah, well.
