That's screwed up,man.Just...despicable.After helping a million african children, helping in the Greenpeace thing, moving the world with impeccable music and lyrics, and being one of the only rockstars to actually get politics right,he doesn't get the nobel?*sulks and curses in a corner*

maybe next year,or the years to come.

But I seriously think he is going to have one on his shelf.

Despicable? Yeah, how dare they give it to some other people who are working toward getting rid of nuclear weapons.

Alicia, if I didn't already love you, I would now.

It's like he said on Conan last night -- it's falattering to be nominated, but that doesn't mean he deserves it.

There are more people doing good in this world than just Bono.

How about celebrating that?

Eh, I wasn't expecting him to win. And neither was he. Stil, it's awesome alone that he got nominated in the first place, and this other guy seems to have deserved it a whole lot. Not that Bono didn't, but the other guy's pretty cool too.

Yeah, I read the Reuters story a few minutes ago. Disappointed, but kinda expected the nuclear guy to win the award, just because it was the predictable choice, and awards organizations are not often daring twice in a row.

Heh, quelle surprise. It's like the Mercury Music Prize - the bookies' favourite never wins, they always pick someone you've never heard of. ;)

I would be surprised if he ever got it. The Nobel Prize is truly something special, and the committee will probably think twice before giving it to a celebrity.

I don't believe Bono should have won it this year. There were just better candidates.
In the future? Maybe...

Well, at least it's going to a group that's acting on its knowledge of how to dismantle the atomic bomb threat.

I've heard from several places that one actually has to campaign to win the prize, which, if true, puts a cynical tarnish on the award itself.

If it's true, and Bono ever won, I'd be disappointed in him for gunning for it.

Yes, he does great work, and yes, it's great that he's doing it, but ... campaign or no, I think they should give it to someone who does nothing but work on whatever great work they're doing.

Plus, I'm glad he didn't win because the backlash would be U-G-L-Y. 56,364 articles/editorials/random comments bitching about how a rock star won.

Well put;I completely agree with you. Personally, I still find it so random that he's been nominated three times. Yes, he does more to fight AIDS and poverty than most of the world's heads of state, but it's still really odd to think of a rock star as a Noble Prize winner (in *any* category). I think the nomination is enough recognition in the long run, personally.

Oh, good. I was starting to think I was the only one who didn't think he should win. *g*

"56,364 articles/editorials/random comments bitching about how a rock star won...."

As oppossed to the 56,364 articles/editorials/random commments about some spoiled adolescent brat with too much money who crashes her car/makes homemade porn/gets wasted at a night-club.

A rock star who does GOOD STUFF. The horror.

Honestly, if anybody would have a problem with that, I'd be really annoyed.

I'm not saying I'm annoyed with a rock star that does good stuff, in case that wasn't clear. I'm annoyed with the potential of a big ol' backlash, because it's annoying as a fan to wade through all that crap.

I mean, there's already a lot of people who roll their eyes at any mention of Bono and his quest, I can only imagine the backlash if he won.

But yeah, it's a very silly reason to not want him to win. My other reason stands much higher on my list. ;-)

"I'm not saying I'm annoyed with a rock star that does good stuff, in case that wasn't clear."

Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. I meant that the mainstream media only seems to pick up on the negative things celebrities do.

You're right--there would be a backlash, but I think it would be unwarranted and unneccesary.

Agreed. Ugh, even just thinking about the backlash makes me cranky! ;-)

I will hold my tongue. I won't say anything. I won't utter "AQ Khan!" Or other incriminating names. Instead, I will stand silent and allow him to receive praise. ElBardei's names deserves to be set beside a few of the... gentlemen, that have won.

The only year they ever got it right was 1948, when the committee stated, "there was no suitable living candidate".

Then Bono has some catching up to do. There was obviously someone more qualified.

Either way, I don't think he's the type of person who would ever actively seek the Nobel Peace Prize. He's not one for wearing all the awards he has ever won on his sleeve or anything.

One day.

Bono Dominus Mundo.

Am I shocked? No.
Disappointed? Sure.

But the man said it last night: They would never give it to a rock star. At least Bono was humble about it.

Then again, there's always next year :)
