Today's Song of the Day is

Last Night on Earth

This is probably my favorite track off my favorite album.  Pop is the one album I consistently love, and can never overplay (and I've tried..).  I think I love this song partly because it was the first single released after I went U2-crazy, and partly because of the video.  Gotta love William S. Burroughs at the end.

The song is great--it's a fast, eyes wide open, drive too fast song with, in my opinion, some of Bono's best lyrical work.  Edge's vocals, again, win a prize with the "Would you believe in someone..." part.  But if we're handing out awards, you have to show respect for Adam's bass here.  This song, I can't say enough good things about it.  i.just.love.it

Check the George Harrison reference in the

She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we're better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today

You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away

She knows just what she's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth

She's not waiting on a saviour to come (Hows-ya classy)
She's at the bus-stop with News of the World and the Sun
Sun, here it comes
She's not waiting for anyone

You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away

She don't care what it's worth
But she's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth

Would you believe in something
Slipping away
Would you believe in someone
Slip slide
Would you believe in something
She lets me
Would you believe in someone
Slipping away
The world turns
Would you believe in something
And we get dizzy
Would you believe in someone
Slipping away

She's living, living next week now
You know she's going to pay it back somehow
She hasn't been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon then she'll sleep

You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away

She already knows it hurts
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth
Last night on earth
Last night on...

Fantastic song. I really love Pop a lot. It definately is an album to drive fast to, and this is one of my faves on there..."You gotta give it away.." Love that line. and this one "The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today"

I think too many people knock this album. It was ahead of it's time and has some very powerful lyrics and vocals on it.

LOVE this song. Along with "Discotheque", "Mofo" and "Gone", these tracks make Pop the fantastic album it is. Agree with everything you've said about the song. :)

I'm so glad you included the believe lines from the video version! I must confess that the vid somewhat confuses me. Not sure what they were getting at there, but I watch it on repeat sometimes just for those lines.

I love this song, and Pop has to be on the top of my favorite U2 albums list! I just can't understand why people hate it so.

I have SO MUCH to say about this song. It's definately one of my favourites. The line "She hasn't been to bed in a week, she'll be dead soon, then she'll sleep" is one of my very favourite U2 song quotes ever. It reminds me of me, and my very odd sleeping habits.
The song is about a woman committing suicide, and yet it's peppy. The same can really be said for Pop as a whole, some of the most upbeat songs on the album have this really dark stuff in the lyrics. I love it.
As for the video, I had to watch it about 12 times before I realized what the hell was going on (and much of it still doesn't make sense), but I love, love, love the video. I'm actually currently writing a story loosely based around the video.

Also, a couple of months ago, I made a trio of animated banners featuring the three verses of the song:

I don't think it's about suicide, actually... Well, obviously it could be but that's not my interpretation. However I LOVE the video too! I watched it today before I left the house, heehee.

I love this song too, and I love the video. I love Larry driving, lol, and the bit when Edge drives the car and does the cute lil eyebrow thing, and then it amuses me when Sophie Dahl's in the back of the car and the way Adam looks at her, lmao! It's funny!

And I love Edge's vocal on the song, too, he makes it work really well. Yup, ace song.

I had forgotten the single version was different - I've hardly ever listened to this one. Hmm, interesting. I'm so used to the album version that it's hard to adjust to the little changes here, though I'm not sure either one is "better" as such. It's just weird to hear it sounding a lot... cleaner, I suppose is the word. And it catches me by surprise when Bono sings a few bits differently.

The intro on this version is very nice, with the bass coming in first on its own - that works well. Shame how it skips past Bono's mumbly bit though. And I prefer the bridge on the album version... the "Would you believe" bits are pleasant in a way, but the lyrics on the album are so much better and it really needs those falsetto vocals.

I would comment on the video, but I'm not *overly* familiar with it. I think I've only seen it once or twice, and not that recently (December 2002, in fact, when the Best Of DVD was released). I know it was weird, slightly disturbing and oddly amusing in parts!  Actually, I reviewed that DVD in my journal at the time, so let me see what I wrote about the LNOE video. Here we go:
"Videos I hadn't EVER seen before - Please, Last Night On Earth. Those were both quite odd... Last Night On Earth was rather fucked-up, which shouldn't surprise me I suppose, considering the fucked-up animations that accompany it on the concert screens!!  Was that Sophie Dahl in the video?  It looked like her, anyway...!"
LOL, I think I need to watch this again sometime. :p
