Hello Hello!!

Song(s) of the day - Openers @ 02:17 pm

volare:
I'm currently feelin: tired tired

You know you're a U2 fan because you perk up when The Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" comes on the radio, and you have to kind of remind yourself that you're in your car, not the concert hall...

You know your DJ is ALSO a U2 fan when he follows that up with COBL...

In keeping with themes lately....
I know very few of us have been around long enough to have attended every U2 headline tour. I sure as hell haven't. For the ones you haven't been present for... try and imagine it eh?

I have seen U2 on every tour since The Unforgettable Fire Tour (I was 17 then) and for me it's a tie. Between 4th of July/11'0 Clock Tick Tock and Streets on The Joshua Tree Tour. That was when seeing U2 was truly a religous experience. You felt the Spirit. It was not just a GREAT ROCK show, it was something powerful, something you felt inside of you and gave you goosebumps. The sound of the Edge's opening guitar playing on 11'0 Clock, in a small arena (smaller than the ones they are even playing now), it was just AWESOME!!!!!!

The JT/Streets opener was also quite intense, especially with the extended Streets guitar at the beginning ala Rattle and Hum (for those of you too young to have experienced the JT tour)...it was just as awesome as it looks/sounds in R&H but so much better.

Ok. Dont get me wrong, I love the U2 of now, but the U2 of then was even more exciting because back them, you knew they were going to be the band they are now and it was just exciting to be a part of it!

I've only seen tours live from PopMart onwards. It was a very tough call, but I went with PopMuzik/Mofo. The Streets intro on R&H looks amazing, so I think it's probably a tie actually.

The thing that clinched was not so much the song itself, but the band's entrance. Coming through the crowd just got the stadium so monumentally pumped. And for several of the North American shows, it meant coming from the back of the place all the way through the crowd. People just went berzerk!

Never heard an UF tour concert, but I can imagine how 11 O'clock Tick Tock would sound mind-blowing as an opener.

And COBL...I hear those opening keyboard notes and I just drift off into bliss.

I've only seen U2 on the Vertigo tour, but just hearing the "unos! dos! tres!" was brilliant, it was a great way to kick of a show ^_^

Where The Streets Have No Name! As far as I'm concerned, that's the ultimate opener of all time. 11 O'clock Tick Tock is my second - unfortunately, my third, Hawkmoon 269, isn't on your poll. Now ... let's see if I can do this off memory before 6:30am, every opener U2 has used:

11 O'clock Tick Tock, Carry Me Home, Stories For Boys, The Ocean, Twilight, With A Shout, Rejoice, Gloria, Wire, MLK, Where The Streets Have No Name, Stand By Me, Bullet The Blue Sky, All Along The Watchtower, Hawkmoon 269, In God's Country, God Part II, Zoo Station, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Mofo, Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until The End Of The World, City Of Blinding Lights, Love And Peace Or Else.

Those are the openers that U2 have used for every single full tour concert, plus two from outside-tour shows (All Along The Watchtower was the impromptu San Francisco gig during November 1987 [which some may argue was part of the JT Tour's third leg] and Until The End Of The World was used at an ATYCLB Promo club gig). I just checked that against a file I have from my database that supplied info to U2Setlists.com/Elevation-Tour.com/U2-Vertigo-Tour.com and it's correct. :)

I wonder if you're even allowed to make a poll big enough to include all of those ...

(By the way, I find it ironic you included With A Shout, which opened about four shows, and MLK, which opened one on the UF Tour and then reappeared as an opener for U2's brief set on the Conspiracy Of Hope Tour.)

Haha, you can tell it's before 6:30am in that before I wrote COBL, I thought I would put Vertigo after LAPOE, and once I wrote LAPOE, I thought I had put Vertigo before COBL! Not even proofreading picked that up. Oops!

Revised list:

11 O'clock Tick Tock, Carry Me Home, Stories For Boys, The Ocean, Twilight, With A Shout, Rejoice, Gloria, Wire, MLK, Where The Streets Have No Name, Stand By Me, Bullet The Blue Sky, All Along The Watchtower, Hawkmoon 269, In God's Country, God Part II, Zoo Station, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Mofo, Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until The End Of The World, City Of Blinding Lights, Love And Peace Or Else, Vertigo.

It's also worth noting at least two pre-Boy shows are known to have opened with The Silver Lining, an early version of 11 O'clock Tick Tock. In fact, if I kept going, I could probably pluck out of my brain (or just check my database) the openers used for shows outside of the full tour concerts from 6 September 1980 (opening date of Boy Tour) to today.

Also, if I'd waited until I was a little more awake, I wouldn't have made silly typos like saying my database supplied the three sites, as it very much still supplies! Haha! I keep meaning to take a list of all openers and all closers live on the site but there's always something more I want to tweak ...

Damnit, another correction to my list, and this one definitely proves I shouldn't have attempted the list before 6:30am as I forgot In God's Country, which opened one Lovetown Tour show and I'm obsessive about Lovetown!

Apologies for posting an inaccurate list! Here's how it should be:

11 O'clock Tick Tock, Carry Me Home, Stories For Boys, The Ocean, Twilight, With A Shout, Rejoice, Gloria, Wire, MLK, Where The Streets Have No Name, Stand By Me, Bullet The Blue Sky, All Along The Watchtower, Hawkmoon 269, In God's Country, God Part II, In God's Country, Zoo Station, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Mofo, Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until The End Of The World, City Of Blinding Lights, Love And Peace Or Else, Vertigo.

(Goodness, I wish we could just edit comments! It's embarrassing to post something I claim is accurate only to realise I've made a mistake - then spot another! Well, I'm pretty confident in the accuracy of this one. :) )

I've also discovered polls can contain only fifteen options, which is one short of the amount required to fit every eighties full-tour opener. Ah well. Maybe I'll move God Part II to nineties as it first opened on 26 December 1989 and the other instance was 5 January 1990 - it's 50% a nineties opener! So if you don't mind, maybe I'll run with your poll idea and post two polls over a couple of days, "favourite eighties opener" and "favourite nineties opener".

You had IGC in both previous polls, and put it twice in the last one. :D

I'm trying to decide which would be my favorite, and....wow, I don't think I can! It's a race between Streets, Elevation, and COBL. You have to go with something high-energy...I think it's so bizarre that they've opened with MLK before!

You have got to be kidding. I think I should just go back to bed. *gives up*

Ooh, I love COBL, that's probably my fourth-favourite, and it's such a great opener for this tour. I agree about the opener needing to be high energy: at one UF Tour show, they opened with MLK --> The Unforgettable Fire and the crowd's roar was so loud that it drowned out MLK!

Why were you awake and online before 6:30 in the first place?! ;)

I remember deciding before my concert that I would rather have COBL as the opener than LAPOE, and so when I heard the opening I shrieked. Well, I shrieked a lot at that concert, but that was one of the happiest moments. :D

How big were UF shows, usually? Because I can imagine that MLK -> UF might be cool in a smaller setting....but by then I'm guessing they would have had a sizeable crowd, no?

I'm a bit confused. Am I supposed to vote for which one of these opening songs I like best live, or am I voting for which song is the best opening song. Because the answer isn't the same ;)

Streets is my favorite song, and favorite live song, but as for opening a show, I'd say COBL, MoFo, Zoo Station, Elevation, and Out of Control work better as an opener. Streets seems better in the middle, as the first encore perhaps. I really loved the flow from Bad into "40" into Streets during Elevation.

I'm *really* jealous that they actually play the Arcade Fire on your local radio station. New rock on New York radio means playing that Nickelback single a million times a day. The last really new band they started spinning at K-Rock was Franz Ferdinand last summer.

Zoo Station all the way. I'm too young to have seen a ZooTV show, but I've always been blown away by the Sydney video and wished I could have been there to witness that entrance in person. Then I went to Twickenham in June and I finally *did* get to see the ZooTV opening in person, albeit at the start of the encore rather than the main show! *dies blissfully happy*

Vertigo makes a great energetic opener as well though, as did Elevation with the Influx Mix leading into it. Pop Muzik / Mofo is also brilliant.
