Bono's Wife 'No. 1' For Top Irish Job
Rock star Bono's wife has been asked to run for president in her native Ireland.
The Irish Labour Party are so impressed by mother-of-four Ali Hewson, they want her to go for the post at the 2004 elections.
Ali, 41, has grabbed attention as she leads a campaign urging Irish people to bombard Tony Blair and Prince Charles with millions of postcards demanding the closure of Sellafield nuclear plant.
Pop diva Samantha Mumba, the Corrs and the entire Irish rugby squad are all supporting her plan.
A Labour insider said: "There has been a lot of talk about her. She would make a fantastic president and has always been very politically minded.
"She is known for hiding away from the limelight so she would need persuasion."
But yesterday, a Labour Party spokeswoman said: "We haven't announced an official candidate for the election yet as it is too far away."
