Hello Hello!!

November 29th, 2005

A minor complaint... @ 04:55 pm

malaria:
I'm currently feelin: discontent discontent

I'm sure I'm going to get bitched at for this, but I am really sick of reading all the "slashy" conversations in this community regarding the members of U2. I'm sorry, but I don't want to read comments that hint at Bono getting it on with Edge, or Adam, or Larry, and I know I'm not alone in this sentiment. I have nothing against slash itself, but I think that sort of thing should be kept in designated communities, not spilling all over this one in practically every post I read. Could you gals possibly try to restrain yourselves? Please?

Mkay, dunno if this relates to my last post but I'm not gonna get into an argument, lol. It's not that big a deal to me. I'm sorry if anything I said bothered you. I did place everything behind a cut, though, and well, it was my own personal comments and opinion on stuff on the DVD. People say lots of other stuff on here I don't agree with and get bored of, but well, I just try not to read it.

Again though, sorry if I upset you. :)

Oh, this wasn't started by you, believe me - this is something that's been a mild annoyance for a lot of us, for a LONG time ;)

I honestly didn't mean to cause SUCH a firestorm (people are making me out to be some sort of evil anti-gay censorship-happy uptight grump) but I felt that it had to be mentioned, as I knew that it was something that was making a lot of other members a bit uneasy.

I have to agree with you. I'm a supporter of slash and write it in other fandoms but something about U2 slash bothers me. I guess I have a hard time seeing my favorite band slashed. I cannot see them like that. That's like slashing the Beatles...I don't know, it just my opinion but I would also appreciate it taken somewhere. You're not the only one that feels this way, honey, but thanks for saying it.

As long as it's not explicit, I think everyone has the right to make whatever commentary they like, within reason. For example I'm sick to death of whingey posts about tour dates/Bono being a hypocrite because he wears designer sunglasses, etc, etc, but that doesn't mean people should be kept from saying those things.

If you see something that bothers you, either don't read it, or comment with your brief take on things and then leave it be, like you would with any other situation.

I wasn't suggesting that everyone censor themselves, for pete's sake, just to not turn every other thread into descriptions of imaginary love affairs.

Plus, it's pretty hard to "not read it" when it randomly appears in otherwise non-sexual/non-band-relationship threads. I wouldn't have made a post about it if it wasn't becoming an annoyance to other community members, not just myself.

I don't enjoy slash, so it sort of bugs me as well.

I know what your saying, I dont want to read about 4 hairy arsed blokes in that way neither. But that's part of U2 fandom, and it will always will be.

So yeah I dont think we need to adjust the community rules just yet, its not harming anyone.

Did you get the memo?

Oh and um, personally, I think can get about 300 times worse than what people post around here. I'm actually surprised at how much restraint there is. But to each his own.

I've kinda always had problems with any non-fictional-people slash. Just doesn't seem right to do...

Besides, let's face it... Bono doesn't belong with Edge. He belongs with ME! ;)

I don't really see what the problem is. There are random comments by people that are of that nature, yes. But they're far from explicit and they are just that-random comments. Like brunerhyme said, there are quite a few things said in this community and in the comments that I don't like. People talk about topics and have opinions that I find to be rude and ignorant or that just go against what I think is right. But it's a free and open community so I just "to each their own" and let it slide. I don't think that because you are uncomfortable or don't like a topic it shouldn't be allowed into people's general conversations. Sure, full on topics about it might be a concern, as there is a corresponding community for that. But if you don't like it-don't read it or ignore it, as people in fandoms everywhere have to do. Fandom is a huge place and we all have to get along and to do that sometimes means we accept other people's views, ideas and opinions no matter how far away they are from our own. I don't think it's fair to tell people they can't express themselves because it is making you uncomfortable when their comments really aren't hurting anyone.

come up for air leelee!! That was one major ass comment. ;)

I'm with you though; I don't particularly find the slash crap relevant, but I'd rather just ignore it than kick up a stink.

Oh boy, are you ever going to get flamed for this!

I'm not too wild about U2 slash myself, but I find that simply ignoring it helps...there's no need to point it out. It saves bandwidth, AND you don't offend those who actually do enjoy it. I've never seen anyone go overboard in this community or any others. My friends list is a different matter entirely... (Just kidding, I love you guys! *hugs* )

I think we really do restrain ourselves quite a bit already. Believe me, it could be much, much worse.

It's also not like it comes completely out of the blue. I mean, Harry/Draco slash is out of the blue as much as I love it. The guys are all over eachother. I'm not saying that they're actually sleeping together (I know they're not), but the way they're constantly cuddling, and kissing, and hugging, and biting, and yes, even grabbing one another's arses on stage, they almost make it seem as though they are.
I mean, the typical slash fangirl with no previous knowledge of U2 or their history, watching a concert/video/looking at pictures/whatever might look at them and think "My god, they must be sleeping together." Though we, as fans, know that it's just a game (I personally think that they do it on purpose just to drive us crazy).
I'm just saying, they obviously have no problem acting slashy, so there shouldn't be much harm in a bit of joking about it here or there. We don't get graphic here, and I'm fine with that.

I totally and completely agree. I mean, take the recent Rush Limbaugh thing where he accused Bono of having a mistress. U2's publicist came back saying 'This is so absurd it doesn't deserve a response. However, Bono and [bandmate] Edge have been spending a lot of time together in New York lately.'

If they're not so uptight about a little fun, why should we be? Just chill. Live and let live, people.

It's bad enough when people do it with fictional characters that would never be involved in a relationship (Mulder/Krychek, Harry/Draco), but to write fanfic about real people? I find that disturbing. But then, I just ignore it. *shrug*

OK, this is completely off topic: I LOVE that icon. Can I steal it? Will credit as appropriate.

And more to the point, I don't mind the slashy stuff per se, though it's not for me so I've just been skipping it.

Of course you can steal the icon, considering I can't remember who I got it from in the first place! :) I'm not one of those gals who gets all possessive of icons, and I also can't really understand those that do... /tangent.
