Discotheque vocals @ 07:50 pm

mrslat:
I'm currently feelin: melancholy melancholy
I'm currently hearin: U2 // Do You Feel Loved

I figure a lot of you will have no problem answering this question, so I figured I'd ask it here--

In "Discotheque," who is the not-Bono voice that dominately sings throughout several parts of the song (most noticably, "You know you're chewing bubble gum...")?

Also, I'd be interesting in knowing what you people think of "Pop" as an album. I think it's pretty good; I liked the style of "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me," and a lot of the stuff on Pop has a similar feel. That said, I think that half of the songs on the album aren't up to par with U2's regular standards. I loathe "Miami" with a passion, in particular.

My favorite songs are "Staring at the Sun" and "Wake Up Dead Man."

Pop is probably my second favourite U2 album, after Achtung Baby, therefore certifying me as a freak in the U2 community *G*

I think it's brilliant. I think there is a unity to it and I love the way they used the dance beats and the production as a disguise to some of the most bleak and intense lyrics they've had. Part of the reason it didn't go over as well, (including the tour) is that it's all ironic and I think alot of people didn't get that.

Everyone always told me that this album was crap, so I was very hesitant when I bought it. I have to say that I love it.
I like "playboy mansion" and "wake up dead man"

I'm not a fan of 'Pop.' There are too many songs I really dislike on it ('Miami,' 'Gone,' [yes, 'Gone.' EW.] 'Playboy Mansion...' etc.) for it to be anything but my least favorite U2 album.

I have to say, though - I adore 'If You Wear That Velvet Dress.' 'Wake Up Dead Man' is all right, as is 'Discotheque.' Everything else (except what's in the 'dislike' list up there) I can basically take or leave.

And I don't know about the not-Bono singing in 'Discotheque.' It never occurred to me that it was a different person (you're talking about the low, slightly gravelly-sounding voice, right?), I always just assumed it was still Bono singing a different part, maybe with a voice-changey thing. Heh. I obviously don't think about these things. Now I really want to know, though. :)

Both voices are Bono -- they just layered the vox.

I love Pop. Not crazy about "Playboy Mansion" or "Staring at the Sun," but "Mofo," "Gone," and "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" are amazing songs (and I still wonder what they were thinking not releasing "Mofo" or "Gone" as singles).

The second voice you hear I'm pretty sure is still Bono's (just dubbed over) but if it's not him, it'll be Edge.

As I stated above Pop is my favorite album. It's a complete departure for the band sonically (and I like artists that break their own molds), and the lyrics are perhaps the strongest that Bono has ever written.

I quite like Pop and I very often find myself defending it even though I really could take or leave "Miami" and "Playboy Mansion". "Please" is just brilliant. I just tell people that they were ahead of themselves and that's why a lot of people didn't like the album...they didn't "get" it. lol

how can we be talking about pop and not mention 'last night on earth' at least once! i am in lurve with that song. pop isn't one of my top albums, but i certainly don't dislike it. plus, you can't like the new discotheque mix - it's not discotheque without the boomchas.

I've never understood why people dislike Pop. It's a tad weak in the middle (Miami took forever to grow on me, and The Playboy Mansion has some awful lyrics; I'm also not a big fan of the screechy guitar riff in Gone), but apart from that, it's a brilliant album. The first handful of songs have such a warm glow to them. My favourite track is probably Do You Feel Loved, if I absolutely had to pick, but I really love several of them. Mofo rocks!

Oh, and I love it when they layer Bono's vocals in songs like that, it's always such a cool effect. It confused me a bit when I first got into U2 though, I was convinced that the whole band was singing on Discotheque, until I became more familiar with them and discovered that (a) Larry & Adam usually don't sing, and (b) Edge's voice isn't that gravelly! *g*

Pop is one of my least favourite albums by U2. I believe the second voice in that is still Bono, just singing into one of those box thingies that change your voice. :)

Please not praised enough. . .

Easily one of U2's greatest songs, and just listen to the live "Popheart" single version and you will really hear why. One of the band's most amazing singular performances. Great f'ing song, and yes, Pop is an overly slammed album. Some real moments of brilliance.

Though it contains the only U2 song I find (almost) unlistenable - "Miami" - I think Pop is an amazing album. I wouldn't say it was one of my favorites, it's probably halfway up the list.

I did a double-take when I first heard it. It was the last U2 studio album I purchased to make my collection complete, and I always heard about how bad it was. I've heard the argument that Pop was underwritten... to me, Zooropa needed a little more work than Pop did (not dissing Zooropa at all, it's a great album as well).

But anyway, I was quite surprised at the quality of the album. Maybe it helped that I didn't expect another Achtung Baby...

"Pop" could have been a great album, but the techno production ruined it. As far as songwritting, it's as solid and strong as anything U2 has done. There were lots of great songs--"Discotheque", "Do You Feel Loved", "Mofo", "Please", "Last Night on Earth", "Gone". While I intensely disliked "Wake Up Dead Man" on the album, I loved the acoustic, stripped-down version the band performed in Slane and Boston's Elevation shows.
What spoiled it for me was too many 'bells and whistles'. Too much techno tweaking. It might as well have been recorded over a drum machine (which made it seem as if Larry and Adam were left out entirely.)
For me, that was a sign saying they needed to go back to their roots, as a rock band.

pop is my favorite. a lot of people complain it was too heavily produced or whatever, but personally i find HTDAAB and ATYCLB much more heavily-produced sounding.
