Alrighty, so I've heard that lots of U2 fans are also fans of R.E.M., and I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I've decided to pick up one of their albums... but which one should I buy? Is there a R.E.M. equivalent of Joshua Tree? Thanks a lot.

I don't know if its an equivalent to Joshua Tree (which is my all time favorite) but I loved Document. Definitely one of REM's better albums.

I guess you could say "Automatic for the People" is there JT.
Start with that, its a quite superb album. One of the best albums of all time.
Then there's "Document", "Green", Out of Time, Monster (my personal fave).
I also love the last last album reveal.

In other words you'll probably end up buying them all i'd say. top band!

My absolute favorite REM song is 'You are the Everything' on Green. As far as JT status, I'd say Green. or Automatic.

While everyone else is opting to stay on the mroe commercial side, as THE JOSHUA TREE is U2's most commercial album, if I were to recommend my favorite R.E.M. album, I would have to say RECKONING from 1984. It's not as popular as AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE or MONSTER or DOCUMENT.

AFTP (was the first REM album I owned) is a good album along with the other commercial successes of Green & Document.

For a Zooropa/Achtung sort of experience, I would go for Up, Monster, or New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

But, being the uber-cross fan, I can't help but also suggest the older sounds like I would suggest October and Unforgettable Fire to a new U2 fan wanting to experience pre-JT. So, for that kind of experience, you can't go wrong with Fables, Reckoning, or Murmur.

I like the feel of Reveal and equate it about the same place in my CD collection as Pop.

Favorite REM song, Nightswimming off of AFTP.

I love all the ones that have been mentioned so far, but I also must mention Murmur. That album is just brilliant.

I like Document and Green best of the ones I've heard - which doesn't include much of anything newer than Automatic for the People, admittedly - but Eponymous (a compilation of early songs) is also a good introduction to their earlier material, IMHO.
