Mercy @ 10:48 pm

youreanidiom:
Does anyone have any information (what it is, if it's a U2 song, what session it's from, when/how it was released, blah, blah, blah...) about the song "Mercy?" I keep hearing about it but have yet to find it anywhere.

I might be making all of this up but:
I think it was an unused HTDAAB cut that was somehow leaked onto the internet weeks before the album was released.
Yes it's a U2 song.

well...

It was on a CD that Bono gave to someone on Interference.com. She uploaded it there for us to hear and well... yeah.

As to exactly when/where/why it was recorded.. this has been argued on Interference tirelessly ever since. If you go to the site and search on it, the story will come forward.....

My personal opinion is that it sounds more AB era than HTDAAB era... but we'll never know for sure, at least til U2 tell us...

Im sorry. There is NOTHING AB era about Mercy. That logic is fucking incredible. Explain that one to me. His voice sounds nothing like anything on AB. Mercy has "21st Century U2" written all over it. Bono's voice sounds amazingly strong, lyrics are flooring. The music is driving and it is just the most beautiful song that Im sure we will hear in finished form one day on a proper album. Im sorry, but it is ignorance, ignorance i say, if you think that was recorded during AB. sorry if this comes off as rude. but, hey.

There's no call for this kind of rudeness, especially when I've done nothing towards you to warrant it.

I'm sure Achtung Baby was high on your hotlist in 1991... you must have been quite a sophisticated five year old, to be explaining to me all about it... funny, I guess I must have missed its finer points while out at university.

Mercy is a 6.5 minute song that would have gone on How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb if, according to Bono, it didn't mess up the lenght/flow of the CD. Instead of putting it on the CD, it remains an officially unacknowledged song. In the collector's edition HTDAAB booklet, many lyrics to Mercy are scribled on the pages, and on the chart of song progress over time in that same booklet, Mercy remains a newer but not the newest song to go on HTDAAB.

Somebody on interference.com got a copy of the new album + Mercy. I'm pretty sure he/she did NOT get the CD from Bono and has tried to dispel that rumor. Where the CD DID come from, I don't know. Due to the static in the introduction, the rawness of the song, and the difference in style, some people think that the one version of Mercy we have is a rough draft that, in some revised and possibly shorter form, will help propel U2's next album.

Mercy is my favorite U2 song.

hrm, has the U2SJ-got-it-from-B thing gone to "untrue" status now? haven't been keeping up as much since last year...

Speaking of the collector's edition of Atomic...is it worth the cash? I think I'm going to be needing a new copy of that album soon...mine is getting a bit worn.

I have it and the book alone is worth it. It was a birthday gift but I would have shelled out the money on my own. The book contains photographs from Adam and Larry, original paintings from Larry, drawings and words from Bono and drawings from Edge, it also includes their handprints. Overall it's worth it, you also get the bonus DVD and Fast Cars. So yeah, get it :)

If you're willing to shell out the dough, it's a nice little collectible. The DVD was kind of lacking I felt, but the booklet was beautifully put together, and it's the only way you'll get "Fast Cars" on an album, as it includes the UK pressing of HTDAAB
