Song of the Day @ 11:46 am

I'm currently hearin: Like A Song

"Like A Song" from War

Somone around here has this for an LJ-name, don't they?  This one's for you.... yah, that's it.

*ahem* Now that I feel like your DJ.  I was obsessed with War when I first got my hands on it.  I count it as my second favorite album.  This song, in particular, I think is my favorite.... was my favorite.  I'm not so fond of it having it on repeat now, not sure why.  Maybe it's something to be revelled in just once.

It probably has the shortest blurb in ITH.  It talks about the rebel cliche, and all that.  It also mentions my favorite lines "When others need your time / you say it's time to go / it's your time."  This was an indictment of other musicians, who I'm supposing were selfish.  The lyrics are the usual, clever Bono.

Again with the drumming.  The 60-second coda at the end of the song is all Larry.  Edge kinda jumps in, and it almost seems improvised. "Sure, I'll jam with ya buddy."  And then it fades away.  It also starts with a pounding beat, purely Larry.  War was definitely a Larry album... even if he says no one focused on him much until TUF.

Like A Song

Like a song I have to sing
I sing it for you
Like the words I have to bring
I bring it for you

And in leather, lace, and chains
We stake our claim
Revolution once again
No I won't...
I won't wear it on my sleeve
I can see through this expression
And you know I don't believe
Too wrong to be told
Exactly who are you
Tonight
Tomorrow's too late

And we love to wear a badge, a uniform
And we love to fly a flag
But I won't... let others live in hell
As we divide against each other
And we fight amongst ourselves
Too set in our ways to try to rearrange
Too right to be wrong, in this rebel song
Let the bells ring out
Let the bells ring out

Is there nothing left
Is there, is there nothing
Is there nothing left
Is honesty what you want

A generation without name, ripped and torn
Nothing to lose, nothing to gain
Nothing at all
And if you can't help yourself
Well take a look around you
When others need your time
You say it's time to go... it's your time
Angry words won't stop the fight
Two wrongs won't make it right
A new heart is what I need
Oh God, make it bleed
Is there nothing left...

Best part of the song:
Is there nothing left
Is there, is there nothing
Is there nothing left
Is honesty what you want

It's a favorite, but I always listen to it, especially since it comes right after NYD.

War is all about Larry. I'm ready for another Larry album.

That part ALWAYS gets me- my breath hitches in my throat whenever I'm singing along- I'm not sure why!

Definitely my favorite on this album- I always get chills listening to it.

Oh, I love this song. Particularly Edge's crazy riff right before "And in leather, lace and chains" and "Oh, generation without name...". And man, the drumming is phenomenal. This is definitely one of my very favorite U2 songs.

It's an interesting song, because, in a way, it lays out exactly what U2 is planning on doing in their career.

Who we are

What the problem is we are tackling

And how to solve it.

This is my favorite song on "War" and in the top ten of my fave U2 songs..

There is not a lyric I don't like..it just is so powerful I don;t know how to put it into words, but it is raw, and very, very powerful!

One of my all-time faves. Larry's drumming is adrenaline racing and the words- so poignant, even now.

I use to think it was "And wee words won't stop the fight".

I thought Bono was just being a little irishman.

Ahhhh, Like A Song is one of my favourite tracks on War, and I'm constantly surprised by how little attention and praise it seems to get from the fan community in general. So I'm pleased that everyone in this thread has been enthusiastic about it - that makes a nice change!

This is one of my ultimate "angry songs" that's perfect to scream along to when I'm incredibly pissed off about something. As with several War songs, I think I'm pretty good at performing this one, although I usually end up with a bit of a sore throat so it's best left until last. ;)

I can't really add much that other people haven't already touched upon. The drumming is indeed mental and brilliant, and the lyrics powerful - it's one of those songs that seems like it must have written itself, it flows so perfectly. I love the way it races along at breakneck speed, with barely a moment to catch your breath. But I think Bono's oh-so-passionate vocals are what really make the song for me - how can you not listen when he screams so desperately?

I literally cannot pick out favourite bits because the whole song is like one giant favourite bit, so instead I'll try and do some kind of running commentary on what I like:
~ The sudden hip-jerking big drumbeats during the intro. Duh - duh - duh (BOOM-boom!), duh - duh - duh (boom-BOOM!)
~ And with hardly any warning, Edge and Bono have jumped in and we've abruptly launched into the main part of the song. Wheeeeee!
~ The way Bono sings on the line "Revolution once aga-a-a-ain!" and again on "And we love to fly a fla-a-a-ag!" - it's great how he pushes the tune even higher than the previous lines.
~ "I won't wear it on my sleeve!  I can see through this expression, and you know I don't believe!" - RAR!
~ "Too old to be told, exactly who are you?" - loving the caustic tone!
~ "To-night, to-morrow's too laaaaate!" - because nothing stabs at the heart like a touch of falsetto....
~ "But I won't / Let others live in hell / As we divide against each other / And we fight among ourselves" - just how good do those lines sound?
~ "Let the bells ring out (oh oh ohhh...) / Let the bells RING out! (oh oh ohhh...)" - the backing vocals make this perfect.
~ "Is there nothing left?  Is there - is there NOTHING?  Is there nothing left?" - with a gun to my head, this could be my absolute favourite bit of the song.
~ "Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! OH! OH!  A generation without name..." - seriously, if you can listen to this song without going completely berserk, you must be a corpse.
~ "ANGRY words won't stop the fight!  Twooo wrongs won't make it right!  A new heart is what I need, OH GOD make it bleeeed!  Is there NOTHING left?  (oh oh ohhh...)" - this is the other main contender for my favourite bit of the whole song, it's got a whole bunch of highlights rolled into one!

Annnnnd *collapses*.
