Song of the Day

Obviously song of the day today is New Year's Day. But to be creative I want to encourage you to listen to my favorite version (today haha) which can be found on the Popmart Live in Mexico City VHS or the Hasta La Vista Baby CD available from Propaganda back in the day. I really love that version.

Hope 2006 is kind to you all

And anyone want to talk about why they NEVER perform the "So we are told this is the golden age.." section live?

Hopefully tomorrow's song of the day will be more exciting :)

This is totally off the top of my head, but I think it has something to do with that part not being in the single version.

Also, I never noticed that until somebody pointed it out. *hides* What always bothered me was the lack of verb-object agreement in "The newspaper says, says, say it's true" or is it "the newspapers says?" It's infuriating! Or maybe just to me.

Hmm, I've always taken that line as a classic case of Bono's inability to enunciate. Listening to the studio version, I hear: "The newspapers say it's, say it's, say it's true, it's true."

I've always heard "The newspaper says... says... they say it's true, it's true", which pretty much makes sense - "they" being the people who write the newspapers?

That single version excuse. Plus I reckon Bono probably didn't feel that comfortable singing it. I mean we haven't exactly been liiving in the golden age since 83. I'm probably way off, but yeah that's just imo. I don't think Bono has ever said anything on record about that.

To heck with the "golden age" verse ... I want to know why they've never performed the awesome "maybe the time is right/maybe tonight" part!

I AGREE!  I love that part, it always seems such a shame to cut abruptly back to the chorus without any build-up.

Hope 2006 is good to you too (U2 ;) )!

And about the version of the song: it slipped out of my head... I guess I need to listen to the CD when I'll get home... :D

Hmmm...let's see...looks like I got it from acrobaticons, most likely from the U2 icons community.

I *love* Hasta La Vista Baby. I rarely get time to watch the video, but at least with this CD, I can listen to the awesome music whenever I want. I find I know most of the little improvisations off by heart by now!

This version of NYD is missing the killer "YEEEAA-AAAHHH!" intro that I adore, but the soft falsetto Hooooo-oooohhh's are a pleasant enough substitute. GOD I love the echoey keyboards!

I looooovvve the second verse, where Bono's very soft vocals slide up into a bit of gorgeous falsetto on "A chosen few". Guh.

"Turn the lights..... lights OFF. Spotlights - OFF!"  I love that part, for some reason. *g*

Into the guitar solo now... fuck, New Year's Day really is musically one of the best songs they've ever done. It floors me every time I hear it.

Ahhhh that was great... I bloody love that little "flick" of the guitar that Edge often does right at the end of songs. :)  I wouldn't say the PopMart Mexico version is one of my very favourite performances of NYD (I prefer it when Bono's working at full lung power on this song), but it's still a brilliant listen. Even if I'm a week late. :p
