Poll: U2 Pauses @ 01:55 pm

inklingfair:
I'm currently feelin: awake
I'm currently hearin: October - U2

I hope this has never been posted yet...

I was listening to "New Year's Day" (All is quiet...) then "October" came on.

I just realized that U2 aren't just about the sound, but the pauses, too - here's the "pause" I love most:

"But you go on -
*pause of bated breath*
- and on..."

The pause just makes the "and on" infinite.

It could be when Bono stops singing and The Edge comes in with a riff that makes your heart pound like nothing else (like the one in "Miracle Drug", just before Edge sings "Beneath the noise...").

It could be a pause for one of Adam's basslines. Or a Larry drum solo. Or... the breath before "whooo-hooo!" in Elevation.

So... what are your favorite U2 "pauses"? :-)

They definitely have a good sense of drama. My favorite "pause" would have to be in the way they've been playing "Bullet" live this tour. the music's been building and then it stops, pause, and then they start playing more subdued.

i love that pause in October as well.

dont know if this is a pause exactly, but when bono starts singing the various words in Bad - separation, condemnation, revelation etc...there is enough of a pause inbetween some of them that the only thing i can hear is Larry's drum rhythmn and it gets me going.

also live - love the pause in 40 just before Larry starts basshing the drums solo to end the song.

Ooh, what a great question. I'm gonna have to give this some thought.

Off the top of my head, how great are the pauses in the Zoo Station intro? You know, between the crunchy guitar bursts and the crashes where Bono does his backward stagger during the ZooTV shows - I love that!

Also, how about in the song Zooropa, just before the second half of the song kicks in. It's almost like you're floating in space for a few seconds there, and then someone suddenly turns on the gravity. :)

One more for now - you mentioned Elevation, well how about the pause after the bridge, just before the final "A MOLE!" chorus?  I remember when we did that song for SOTD, I said it reminded me of someone bursting through the surface of water having almost drowned - it's a great dramatic moment that makes the subsequent chorus even more fun!

Oh man, I agree with all those! And call me a dork, but I love listening to Zoo Station with headphones on, because of the very beginning-- you know, it starts off on one side, and then the other? The pauses in between at first made me think that something was wrong, but then I heard the sound in the other ear, and then it kicks in through both, and then I realized that hey, it was artistic effect! /ramble

canadanne, are you talking about the pause after "we've got that ring of confidence"? Right around the 4-minute mark? That's one of my favorite moments in U2 music....I can't explain it, but I love that bit.

I also like the pause before the drums crash in Bullet- it's around 2:20, I think. I'm not entirely sure if that's the same pause themegs was talking about, but it's cool nonetheless.

Speaking of the beginning of Zoo Station, you've just reminded me of something.
I bought Achtung Baby right before I moved, and so after reattaching my speakers to my stereo, that was the CD I put in to make sure I'd hooked both of them up correctly.
Except, I kept thinking one of them was unplugged, because all of the sound was coming from just one.

Yep, that's the one! :)  Zooropa has a whole bunch of blissful moments like that, actually...

Oh, I've just thought of another classic series of pauses. Can you - hear - me - when - I.... SIIIIIINNNNGGGGG!

ooh! here's another - "An Cat Dubh", just before Bono breathes "shhh..." (or "she-cat", depending on the version). It gives me goosebumps, waiting for the "shhh" - when I hear it, I feel like a cat about to be petted, but the hand is hovering above me and I just *arch* up into the hand.
