U2 Sound - alikes @ 01:54 am

inklingfair:
I'm currently feelin: contemplative contemplative
I'm currently hearin: Out of Control - U2

1. I was listening to The Ramones' "Teenage Lobotomy" and found the guitar riff at the start (after "Lobotomy! Lobotomy!" and the bass guitar intro - sorry, not so good at musical terms...) seemed familiar.

Then I realized it sounded like The Edge's guitar riff that kicks off "The Electric Co." (the one right after the starting "oooh-oooh...")

Any insights?

2. Is it just my imagination or does U2's "Always" sound like "Beautiful Day"?

3. In the Chicago Vertigo DVD, a "Zoo Station" Edge guitar solo (?) sounded a lot like something from "Walk On".

4. And maybe I'm a moron for mentioning this, but I just realized the Edge was making cat meows with his guitar in "An Cat Dubh". I loved it.

Sorry... I just love the Edge and his guitar. Comment away, all you Edge devotees! :-)

"Always" is directly derived from "Beautiful Day." Or the other way around. I forget which is correct, but they are related, and the band has confirmed as much.

Yeah I was listening to "Always" for the first time today and the chorus started and I said "OMG THAT'S BEAUTIFUL DAY" !!!
It was classic to see me in class, when I wasn't supposed to be listening to my cd player.

O_O.

I think "Always" is an alternative version (or early version) of Beautiful Day. :)

I'm pretty sure that's what I read. Early version before it transmuted into Beautiful Day.

Off topic but guh I love your icon.

I'll try to answer some of your queries. :)

1.) I don't really hear any similarities between Teenage Lobotomy and The Electric Co. If you want to hear guitar riffs and guitar tones that sounds similar to The Edge's earlier style, listen to Television and Echo & The Bunnymen.

2.) It's not your imagination - Always is the song that eventually led to Beautiful Day. If you listen to Beautiful Day, you'll hear "alwaaays" in the backing vocals before the chorus. Sort of a subtle acknowledgement of the original song. Both songs follow virtually the same pattern and the choruses are almost identical (excluding a lead riff Edge plays instead of power chords.)

3.) One of the Zoo Station riffs is quite similar to the Walk On riff, yes. Edge recycled a lot of ideas on ATYCLB. :)

4.) Gotta love slides.

(on # 1) so hard to describe it in words. er... maybe it reproduces the same *feeling* if not the sound.

Thanks for the info! :-)

Ooh, I just remembered another "sound-alike" - but of course, everyone must know this already - the *airplane* sounds in "Bullet the Blue Sky".

I noticed one of the the drum beats from 'Please' is also a the drum opening from 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'.

Yep. Live 'Please' really showcases the similarity well.
