Gosh, that is a hard question, actually!

To tell you the truth...and the honest one at that, I would have to say (and don't shoot me), but Coldplay?

Yes, yes...in mainstream terms, there is a strong similarity between the two bands, but I also feel in terms of ingenuity and not sound...The Beatles, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones...are all up there with them.

U2 isn't a band that sounds like another band in modern music or ever did, and that's the truth. They remind me of other bands in terms of how unique they are in sound and image. That's really what I think.

But Coldplay, they have the Edge thing going for them at times. They'll never match the signature Edge riffs though, unless they come out with "Achtung, Infant/Man"....or w/e.

I.. kind of agree with the Coldplay thing. However, there's a song that reminds me a ton of U2 right now, and it's called "Strangerman" by Ringside. Check it out, it's brilliant.

Coldplay. Their guitarist sounds progressively more like he's trying to be Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree Edge with each album they do. Sadly, he's not anywhere near as good as Edge. Maybe he should buy a beanie?

I stll enjoy listening to Coldplay, though.

LOL at that!

I suggest someone to go to a coldplay concert and make a sign for the guy..

You know, I read this question and my first thought was, god, don't say Coldplay. And of course that's everyone's first reaction, but I swear to god, I do not see the connection. In uniqueness, maybe. But Coldplay sounds like Coldplay, not U2.

Esp. in the old coldplay days comments suggested they were a bit like U2 and articles always suggested that coldplay agreed. I know at some point they were even called the "Diet coke answer to U2."

I love U2 and think there are some similarities with coldplay every now and than. But for that matter I am not a coldplay fan.

I know even some of coldplay fan friends say their band sounds a bit like U2. but than again it just an opinion which differs per person.

I'm a Coldplay fan, but I do think they take a lot of their cues from U2. At least they admit their influences.

Even live, I swear when I saw them in September I was like "they are so copying U2 here and here and here and Chris is acting Bono-like here, here, and there." LOL My best friend thought the same thing. But when I saw U2 in December it's like "finally, the real thing."

Coldplay reminds me of U2 because I feel as happy to have met their music as I did when I met U2's music back in the 80's.

I was just listening to Echo & the Bunnymen, and they had an early-U2-ish "feel" to them. Try "Lips Like Sugar".

NB: Larry seems to like E&tB - he mentioned them in that November 2004 Blender article.

Yeah, Edge likes them too. He likes a lot of that underground indie stuff.

Lips Like Sugar is very UF. The guy even sounds like Bono at times. I always thing The Back of Love sounds like its from a more mature version of Boy.

The Dalton Brothers, but I can't put my finger on why...

I'd have to say Coldplay, too, except they just don't sound as creative as U2. The first time I heard Fix You it sounded a little bit like an Edge riff (not quite as good as Edge would have made it, though). Other than that... I was listening to some classic rock station the other day and a song came on that sounded like U2 but I didn't know the band.

I have racked my brain, and honestly can not come up with one.

To me U2 are kind of in their own category....The Edge's guitar just makes the sound so unique. I have never heard anyone play guitar the way he does.

With English-language bands, the Police circa 'Syncronicity' sounds similar to classic U2, and some REM from 'Life's Rich Pageant,' and 'Automatic For the People' match the sound a little, but the closest match in any language would have to be Japan's L'Arc-en-Ciel. If U2 had a Japanese lead vocalist, few listeners would be able to tell the difference.

Of course, we shouldn't leave out considering The Million Dollar Hotel Band, The Passengers, and The Dalton Brothers.

Mmm, I have to disagree with you on the whole Police thing. Although Synchronicity was their more pop/rock album, it really doesn't sound very U2 like at all. It still has some reggae-wannabe quality, which it's safe to say U2 has NEVER had.(I'm sorry, I'm a very big Police fan as well as U2 XD)

If the Police had finished the revisionist album they aborted in '86, more people would have drawn the camparison. I've only heard the remake of 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' from that session (I recall another song was leaked, though), and it sounds it could have fit in with the songs from 'Wide Awake In America' (it's almost a twin of 'Love Comes Tumbling') and 'THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE.'

I have to agree with all those people saying Coldplay. And the guitarist should definately get an Edge beanie to make him more Edgy. Ahaha. Anyways. Otherwise, U2 has very unique sounds. . .

First time I heard Speed of Sound by Coldplay I thought it was U2... I was like "wtf? new song?"

But I don't have that with most of the Coldplay songs, only with Talk and Speed Of Sounds, and maybe a bid White Shadows....
