POP

what an amazing album, there is so much going on. I could write a whole thesis on it. Sitting here listening to it, as the night turns into daylight, an incredible ride.

"Nobody made you do it, no one put words in your mouth, nobody here taking orders, when love took a train heading south"

Word...the first half of Pop is brilliant. Other than "Please" the second half is a bit weak, but that first half..."Mofo," "Last Night On Earth"...brilliant.

Does anyone know which of the "rare and unreleased" songs were from the Pop sessions? "Levitate" and "Mercy" sound very much like they could've been from that time period. I've always thought about making my own Pop compilation, replacing some of the weaker tracks with those two songs, "Big Girls Are Best" (which is a Pop leftover) and "Hold Me, Thrill Me" just to see if I could still make an album that flowed out of it.

I believe Levitate was from ATYCLB and Mercy was definitely from Atomic Bomb. Im not sure if any of the Unreleased and Rare are from Pop, i could be totally wrong though. Hold Me, Thrill Me was actually written during Zooropa, the scribbly lines on the album cover reveal songs that didn't make the cut. Even though the Wanderer is listed.

I know, but since HMTMKMKM wasn't used on Zooropa, it's fair game..."If God Will Send His Angels" is also from the Zooropa sessions per Bill Flanagan's book. ;)

I wasn't sure about "Levitate" or "Mercy"...they both sound way too techno-ish to be from ATYCLB or Atomic Bomb, but I guess I was wrong. (although they could've been Pop holdovers that they continued to work on later and still decided not to release, who knows)

very true about Angels, how could i have forgotten. I dont see any techno in Mercy, personally. But hey, its a great great great fucking song and thats all that matters. I wished it would have been in the new Into the Heart book, but sadly no new b-sides were listed :(

Not to be the monkey in your wrench but POP is the weakest of all of U2's albums in my view.

Weakest of U2's still is > strongest of most other band's, though. (FWIW, I'm pretty fond of Pop...it took awhile to grow on me but it has a lot of good songs...)

There are a couple songs on there that I like but they are just to slick for me. The mix that they used tended to flatten out the sound and take the balls out of the songs. I think the new mixes of the songs on the Best Of album are infinitely better than the ones on the original album.

i think the abrasive sound it has is due to the fact that they never really finished mixing it, hence some of its roughness.

I don't hear that at all. The Pop versions kick arse, I was appalled at what they did to the songs on the Best Of. I truly hope they never go through with that threat to remake the Pop album... it's great as it is, and shouldn't be messed with (at least not if they're going to do unforgivable things like removing the boom-chas!).

Lyrically... Pop kicks ATYCLB's arse into next week ;P

Totally. I like some of the actual music on ATYCLB better, but lyrically, yeah... I think Pop was their last really great one.

Pop is pretty much God's gift to U2 and therefore, U2's gift to us.
There's so much genius in there musically AND lyrically, I don't see how anyone could say it's U2's weakest album.
The song "Please" for me is probably ranked higher than "One", it's like "One Pt. 2" with a side of "Shut your mouth, you liar!"

Something like that.

To me, this album is undoubtedly their strongest lyrical statement ever. And so comprehensive! Family, politics, religion... and all of it feels straight from the heart.

I did the same thing. Pop is not the album I usually think of first when I want to listen to U2, but every now and again, I get that 'longing' too.

Pop is certainly the most underrated and misunderstood of their albums. Some real gems, and I agree, you just don't get any better than "Please".

Pop is not even anywhere close to being their weakest album, and apart from a small handful of the tracks, I never had difficulty getting into it. I can understand people being weird about Zooropa to begin with, but it mystifies me why Pop gets slagged off the way it does.

I've loved POP from the first listen, didn't need a second to grow on me. I cherish every last bit of it. Weakest album? No way. Strongest, maybe.
