Aung San Suu Kyi Walks On @ 09:00 pm

Lyrical inspiration, Aung San Suu Kyi, who the song "Walk On" is dedicated to...was released from house arrest today...and is now free to once again lead her political party for a democratic Burma.

I'm sure the members of U2 would be absolutely ecstatic to hear this!

From U2faq.com:
Aung San Suu Kyi is a leader of the nonviolent movement for human rights and the restoration of democracy in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). Her father is widely acknowledged as the founder of modern Myanmar. After living abroad for most of her life, Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar in 1988 and started speaking out against the harsh rule of the Myanmar military government. She won democratic elections which were subverted by the military. She was arrested in 1989 and placed under house arrest, which lasted until 1995. Despite her supposed "freedom," the military increasingly restricts her movement and she refuses to accept offers to leave the country because it would mean she could never return.

She was also awarded the Freedom of Dublin award at the same time as U2. As she was still under house arrest, her son was present at the ceremony in Dublin on 18 March, 2000 to accept the award for her.

Wasn't U2's album All That You Can't Leave Behind banned in Burma because of the dediction to Aung San Suu Kyi in the liner notes? I thought I read about this somewhere.

I wonder if her freedom now means the album will be released there.

Not sure if it was banned...but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

I believe it was... I think you could even get thrown in jail if you smuggled a copy of it into the country, or something along those lines.
