Song of the Day @ 01:32 am

Song of the Day

Today's song I picked is Desire (Studio version) from Rattle and Hum.

It's a weird song for me, because it's one of the songs that I generally never pick to listen to, but if it comes on the radio of they play it live, I'm never disappointed and can always get into it a lot.  In other words, it's overplayed in my opinion, yet it's a decent song and I can still appreciate it when the occasion arises.  I sort of feel this way about Pride too, in a way.  The best part of the studio version, for me, is the "Yeah" at the beginning that is half whispered in such a great way.  Gotta love Bono's harmonica playing here too, that's classic.  This song is realtively easy to play on the guitar and was, if I'm not mistaking, the first song I learned to play on the guitar.  Must be why they let Bono join in sometimes ;)
The lyrics aren't as amazing as some songs, but they're rather clever at moments and certainly aren't Bono's worst work. Sometimes it creeps me out when Bono says "and the fever when I'm inside her", I'm not sure why..
Overall I'd say desire is a 3/5 and one of those songs that I like but forget about a lot. Poor Desire...

Lover, I'm off the street
Gonna go where the bright lights
And the big city meet
With a red guitar...on fire

She's a candle burning in my room
Yeah I'm like the needle, needle and spoon
Over the counter with a shotgun
Pretty soon everybody got one
And the fever when I'm beside her
Desire, desire

And the fever... getting higher
Desire, desire... burning, I'm burning

She's the dollars
She's my protection
Yeah she's a promise
In the year of election
Oh sister
I can't let you go
Like a preacher stealing hearts
At a traveling show

For love or money money money
Money money money
Money money money, money money
And the fever, getting higher
Desire, desire
Desire, desire

Desire, desire

Best part of the song is the "money money money money..." part. Awesome.

Also, I prefer the "fever when I'm inside her" because it really just fits the "Desire" theme more than "beside her."
I'm just like you. I never need to hear it, but when it comes on shuffle I always listen and sing along.

Yes! I love Desire. When I was first getting into U2, my mom was thrilled, because she'd been into U2 in the 80s, and so she kept telling me to download the Desire video so she could watch it, and finally I did.
Needless to say, I liked what I saw, and not just because of bouncy-haired, leather-vested Bono, though that helped. The song is just a great, happy, fun, song. You can't sing this song and not smile.

As for lyrics, they're simple, but really clever in some spots. I was singing it once, and as soon as I got to the part with the needle and spoon, my friend stops me and goes "Ugh! Forced rhyming!" (she's a bit of a lyric snob) and so I sat there and explained to her the signifigance of the candle, needle, and spoon.
That's another thing, the live version of "inside her", can be taken two ways. There's the obvious one, sex. But there's the other one, heroin. "I'm like the needle" --> "The fever, when I'm insider her", as in, a needle inside a vein.

Also, isn't it wonderful when something hits you months later? One day I was listening to the song, and the signifigance of "Like a preacher stealing hearts at a travelling show" finally hit me. I suppose it's something not everyone would get, but I'm southern, and so I've been around this:
Preacher = Evangelist (obvious)
Travelling show = Tent revival

The harmonic part was the first piece of music I was able to mimic by ear with any instrument. Another thing about this song I like is the shortness of it, so if I ever have less than three minutes to spare on a CD, it makes a nice addition.

The thing I remember about thsi song most, is being in high school, and hearing it all the time. It was a huge hit!

I also remember trying to decipher the "Yeah I'm like the needle, needle and spoon "

Grew up in a very small town, and the referrence went right over my head..we were all pretty niave.

Still love this song though, but I agree; it is not one that I pick usually.

I love this song..its that rare U2 song that manages to be somewhat sexy. But here's what dawned on me when I saw them live last month: anytime Bono tries to do things are that are overtly "sexy" or rock-star-ish he seems a little ridiculous. That kinda posturing just isn't him, I don't care how hard he tries.
