Song of the Day

Song of the Day today, is, of course "MLK" from The Unforgettable Fire in honor of today's celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. here. A wonderfully simplistic song that has so much meaning for such a great person of courage and integrity.

I couldn't decide between Pride, MLK, and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, but ultimately the beautifully lullabyish MLK won out. Where The Streets Have No Name combined with the current speech regarding the journey of equality would also be appropriate. I hope you listen to MLK today and reflect for a moment.

Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thunder cloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Rain down on him
So let it be
So let it be

Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Let it rain
Rain on him

As a matter of fact, I've been listening to MLK a lot during the past days. I really love it. It's such a "simple" song, yet it has so much atmosphere and emotional strength it makes me shiver every time I listen to it. Certainly one of my all time favorites!

My thoughts exactly!

And one of my favorite things about it, which I believe I have mentioned in a previous post, is that it blends so well into "Streets." Both of the songs have that similar atmospheric quality to them... and, funny enough, both of them are my favorites. =)

Definitely a case of simplicity being best.

It actually took me awhile for me to get into this little gem. I always felt before that it was 'too short', and that the band doesn't give the song enough time to really get into itself. And then I realized that was the point. It wasn't supposed to be a rock song. Or a ballad. It was supposed to be just a simple song, about a simple man you has inspired greatness.

I used to sing my little sister to sleep with this song when she was a baby, and she still sits up and says "Is that my song?" when it plays. She's fourteen now, and still calls it "my song!" One of my favorites. I love the low register at the end of realised.

This song is great to sing a cappela.
I love how this song ends The Unforgettable Fire with the sort of droning which begins Streets on The Joshua Tree.
