Song of the Day Goodness @ 04:15 pm

stay_please:
I'm currently hearin: Lemon (Jeep Mix)

Alright.  Everybody get out their maces and clubs and await volare 's hacker to show.

*waits*

... just kidding, that got boring.  But much luck to him!

Just for verification, based on this post, we seem to have a new SotD line-up for you.  The more the merrier!
Sundays - inklingfair
Mondays - sirensong984
Tuesdays - stay_please
Wednesdays - sapphires13  (eh? eh?)
Thursdays - bonoffee
Fridays - volare
Saturdays - volare

If anyone seems to disagree here, lemme know.  I like adding people, differing opinions and whatnot.  Plus, it'll make it easier when people have only a day (or two) to commit to.

So, while volare is cursing under his breath, I'll swoop in and sub. Without further ado...

"Lemon (Oakenfold Jeep Mix)" from the Lemon single

Another remix that trumps the original, I think.  But this time, I like the original, too.  I <3 Lemon, but it's a tad long.  This cuts it off just on the long side of average at 5:30 instead of being an epic seven minutes.

I lurve the intro, all Larry.  It's pretty much the same rhythm, but louder.  I'm not too fond of the string-slides that play after each line in the verses.  They sound too close to nails on glass or chalkboards, to me.  I also like the we spend less time with the falsetto.  (Okay, so I have sensitive ears and don't like high-pitches, what about it?) Edge's guitar sounds are wonderful through the "and I feel..." lines.  Much better than the strings.

Lemon, and Zooropa, holds some of Bono's best work, I say.  Another mommy song, the "she" wearing lemon (or lime, if you're Pla) is her, in Bono's memory.  "Midnight is where the day begins," is one of the greatest lines ever.

Lemon (Jeep Mix)

Alright
Alright
Alright
Alright
Alright
Alright

Lemon
See through in the sunlight
She wore lemon
But never in the daylight
She's gonna make you cry
She's gonna make you whisper and moan
And when you're dry
She draws her water from the stone

And I feel
Like I'm slowly, slowly, slowly slipping under
And I feel
Like I'm holding onto nothing

She wore lemon / Alright
To colour in the cold grey night / Alright
She had heaven / Alright
And she held on so tight / Alright

A man makes a picture
A moving picture
Through the light projected
He can see himself up close
A man captures colour / Come on baby
A man likes to stare / Little boy
He turns his money into light
To look for her

And I feel
Like I'm drifting, drifting, drifting from the shore
And I feel
Like I'm swimming out to her

Midnight is where the day begins

Alright
Alright
Alright
Alright

A man builds a city
With banks and cathedrals
A man melts the sand so he can
See the world outside, You're gonna meet her there
A man makes a car, She's your destination
And builds a road to run them on, You gotta get to her
A man dreams of leaving / She's imagination
But he always stays behind

And these are the days
When our work has come asunder
And these are the days
When we look to each other

Midnight is where the day begins / Hey, won't you come in?
Midnight is where the day begins / Hey, won't you come in?
Mmm-hi... hey there summer love/ Alright
Mmm-hi... sound your pipe there pete/ Alright
Mmm-hi... the day begins in love/ Alright
Midnight... is where the day begins / Alright
Alright
Alright
Alright
Alright

when the video for lemon came out, all i could think of is what the hell got into bono and i hated it with a passion. didnt give the song a chance at all. (i was not quite 30 i think)

well, just this last year, i was so desperate for all things U2 that i listened to Pop and Zooropa completely for the first time ever, and i was hooked..Lemon is now one of my favorite songs.

this line in particular i thought was brilliant the first time i heard it:

A man melts the sand so he can
See the world outside,

I'll have to give it another listen before I do a proper review, but this remix has never impressed me at all. And I *love* Lemon and Lemon remixes.

One of many tracks that did not deserve a place on the Best Of. I still get so annoyed about that bloody Best Of, it's such a tragic waste!

At the risk of sounding daft, I love Lemon so incredibly much that I can't deal with remixes. I feel as a song it shouldn't be touched, cause I am so in LOVE with it. But ah, you can never fault those lyrics. They make me feel all sad. But in a good way. ;)

Useless comment, am so sorry.

I at one time prefered this remix over the album version. I found "Lemon" a really difficult song to get into at first. I consider it more of a musical departure than some of the stuff on Pop.

I can now appreciate "Lemon" in all its forms, but it took a while to get there.

I once hated it, but I've come to love Lemon, and this remix is just fantastic. I like it much more than the Perfecto Remix, what with the female vocals where Edge's should be.
I too like the the guitar noises during the "and I feel" part.

You got to love how Bono goes from his controlled falsetto to:

...And I feel
Like I'm slowly, slowly, slowly slipping under...

I think the contrast gives a kind of desperate edge to the "slowly, slowly".

Lemon is Truth.

I <3 Lemon, but it's a tad long.

BLASPHEMY!

I also like the we spend less time with the falsetto.

BLASPHEMY!

Right, now we've gotten that out of the way, on with the review. :p

So, Lemon is right up there in or around the coveted spot of My Favourite U2 Song Of All Time, and as well as being sublime on the album and in concert, it also lends itself rather well to remixes. As ever, though, while some remixes are supremely glorious (the Perfecto Mix) and some are groovy growers (the Bad Yard Club Edit), others are just pointless and a bit rubbish. The Jeep Mix falls into the latter category. I downloaded it a few years ago from the Ultrawired site (along with several other remixes), and was so unimpressed that I'm not sure I even listened to it again until the Best Of 1990-2000 came out. If I did, it can't have been more than once or twice.

Right, I'm listening to it now, and.... just.... no. God, it even *starts* way too abruptly!  How can anyone really enjoy this version?  It sounds so *off* all the way through. The groove of it is completely mismatched with the feel of the song. The string screeches at the end of each line are annoying. The little electronicky guitar bursts on "And I feel..." are OK (although even they don't fit very well, they're a bit distracting), and I quite like the atmospheric sections where most of the music stops and it's just the falsetto vocals and a bit of moody background synth. But overall, the whole flow and beauty of the song has been disrupted by the choppiness of the music on this remix.... and then it just kind of *ends* without feeling like it went anywhere, unlike the album version. Ugh, Lemon simply deserves better treatment than this. Where has all the heart and soul gone?

Seriously, I don't know what they were thinking when they stuck this on the B-sides compilation despite having a whole range of superior options. It really sucks that the album version wasn't included, and THIS deeply unsatisfying effort (one might even consider the word "butchering") is the only representation that Lemon gets on there. That's messed up, man. Lemon practically *defines* 90s U2 - it needs to be shown off properly!

I sure hope some of the other Lemon remixes are going to get SOTD'd sometime, so I can post something more enthusiastic!!
