Hello Hello!!

Ba-da-di-do.... @ 08:46 am

inklingfair:
I'm currently hearin: (Trash, Trampoline, and the) Party Girl - U2

I chose this Song of the Day not because of the lyrics - they're the funniest I've heard coming from Bono.

I normally hate songs with the word "party" in it (i.e. "Crazy Little Party Girl" by Aaron Carter). But this irresistible little number did me in:

(Trash, Trampoline and the) Party Girl
This version recorded live on 5th June 1983 for "Under A Blood Red Sky"

I know a girl, a girl called Party - party girl
I know she wants more than a party - party girl
And she won't tell me her name - oh no, not me

[scat singing]

I know a boy, a boy called Trash - trash can
I know he does all that he can - wham, bam
And she won't tell me his name - oh no, not me

[scat singing]
(Guitar hero!)

When I was three, I thought the world revolved around me
I was wrong, and so I sing along
And if you dance, then dance with me

I know a girl, a girl called Party - party girl
I know she wants more than a party - party girl

I know a boy, a boy called Trampoline
You know what I mean
I think I know what he wants
I think I know what he wants
I think I know what she wants
I think I know what you want
I think I know what you want
I think I know what you want
I think I know what he wants

(lyrics from www.threechordsandthetruth.net - with a few additions)

I think of it as a "baby" Mysterious Ways. The song begins with some strumming from the Edge, then Larry and Adam kick in with the "party" groove after "...oh no, not me" - at this point I am always tempted to start wiggling my hips.

I remember an article I read way back about Bono - stumbling out into the street from a rowdy party and bellowing at no one in particular - "No, I will not do the snake dance for you!" Yes, I think this would be the snake dance song. This is the kind of song no one can dance to and maintain dignity. But it's fun and silly and very Bono-ish (read: he can't dance - but he got soul).

My favorite bits: The Edge's playful guitar solo after the second verse, Bono's "ba-dat-di-doo-wa-ba-di-doo-wa-mmm-bah" scatting and Bono shouting, "Guitar hero!"

Oh, and the people yelling "Hey! Hey! Hey!" - I do love an enthusiastic audience.

I have the *funniest* version of this song from NYC5 this year. Bono screws it up about 5 times and tries to say that Larry doesn't know what to do and doesn't know the drum part, and at the show, Larry looked at him, went "HA!" and started in. I'm uploading it right now, if you want to put it in the post. If not, I'll just post it as a comment.

They tried to play Party Girl on the concert in Gelsenkirchen (Germany) in 2005, and I remember that Bono couldn't get the lyrics in the right order, mixing them all up, and eventually he told the audience "Hold on, I'm in trouble here" and went to Edge who had to tell him the lyrics... and then Bono simply said "You sing it" and Edge carried it away ;-) That was very amusing :-)
It would be nice if you could give a link to your NYC5 version, I'd love to hear that :-)

I never knew the feeling of that night is leaving you, dear *tight hugs* I don't know, maybe it's this recording that keeps the night so alive for me -- but then, I have no recording of the night in Munich, and the feeling is still there. Still with me, keeping me warm the very moment I think of it.
How come it's fading away for you, luv? Oh I know, if you knew you'd stop it :-/ I just don't want you to feel sad about it (although I understand why, don't worry). I think I know what to do about it. And don't be nostalgic, we had the bestest time ever AufSchalke, right? Think back of it... get back into the feeling... when Bono sang "With or without you"... "Vertigo"... and the whole stadium, 60000 people, you and I, screamed our souls out... remember how the stadium vibrated, how the ground was shaking and the air was burning with love...and get hold of that feeling, love, it's still with you, I'm sure of that *many many hugs*

Thanks for the upload :D Now that was funny... (though it took a million years to download - blasted dialup)

I'm so sorry about that. I had it in a .wav file and it was so late that I didn't even realise that it would be so gigantic!

is that an audio file? because it tells me it's something about 46MB and that's horrific for a dial-up person like me :-/

Yea, .wav is an audio file. I can rip it down to an MP3 for you. I just usually don't because alot of the bootleg community don't like lossy versions. Here it is, at only about 8.5 MB:

Oh, I see. Thanks a lot for making it an MP3 file now, dear, it helps a lot. I'm downloading it right now, and although it'll take another 20 minutes *headdesk* it's perfect for me ;-) *hugs*

LOL! Bono must be losing it, because he knew the lyrics pretty well during Boston 5/28 (though I wasn't nearly close enough to see if the lyrics were on the teleprompter!).

Sorry this is OT, but I've been pretty absent from LJ (and most blogs/boards) since the Vertigo tour began, so I didn't notice your user pic until just this morning when I checked out my Friend's Page and I nearly fell out of my chair because I totally know the girl in the pic! So random! Anyhoo, just had share. Cheers! :)

You're the second one who's said he/she knows the girl... I have no idea who she is - this image cropped up on Google Image search and I had to make it into an icon :)

I think I've only ever listened to Under A Blood Red Sky about twice, to be honest. For some reason that album just doesn't interest me. However, this live version of Party Girl is so memorable that even though I haven't heard it many times, it's totally burned into my brain. So every time I'm listening to the original B-side version, I find myself adding in the "Oh no, not me" lines, and Bono's scat singing to the guitar tune. :)  I'm very fond of this song.

And you're right, the crowd's "-- Hey! -- Hey!" chant is awesome. :D
