I'm currently feelin: nerdy
I'm currently hearin: Walk On - U2

OMG, I almost forgot to do this, because Madonna is taking over my brain, and I can't stop listening to her new album. But, I'm forcing myself to take a mini-break from her to bring you the Wednesday Song of the Day. It's only 4:30 AM here, but I plan on spending the rest of the day sleeping and/or dead, so you guys get this a bit early.

"Walk On" from All That You Can't Leave Behind

Ahh, where to begin. ATYCLB is really not one of my favourite albums (I can be quite bitter about it too), but Walk On is one of the few highlights on the album, to me at least.
For those that don't know, this song was written for Aung San Suu Kyi, a political activest kept under house arrest. Though she's free to leave the country, she would never be able to return if she did. Thus, she stays to fight for her freedom, seperated from her husband and children in the UK, who have been denied entry into Burma.
Knowing that, you can see how the lyrics of the song make perfect sense in the context. Of course, U2's lyrics are known for being universal. Personally, for me, this song is sort of like Stuck In A Moment (You Can't Get Out Of) part 2. Whereas SIAMYCGOO is tough love, Walk On is Bono giving you a cuddle and telling you to keep your chin up.
In theory, the song is uplifting. It ought to be, anyway, shouldn't it? But personally, I find bitterness when I listen to it. It's the sort of song I'd listen to when I'm feeling really miserable and wanting to start tearing my room apart, oddly enough.

The song starts with a tambourine (Off topic, but my immediate reaction to Bono with a tambourine tends to be: "Oh no! He's got a tambourine! That means he's gonna dance **facepalm**"). Bono delivers his spoken opening lines, and then the song really begins, with Edge's famous chiming guitar.
I tend to focus solely on the lyrics when I listen to this song, so I haven't much to say about the music itself. Except that Larry's using a ton of cymbals, and I can barely even hear Adam. Overall, the song is beautifully written, both musically and lyrically. The chorus is one of those choruses that you just have to sing along with, as loud as possible.

I'd also like to point out, that I adore the video for this song (which can be viewed here). The imagery of all of the people, so different on the outside, changing from one to another, suggests that deep down we're all the same, we all hurt, we all have pain, we all have problems, but we all walk on. Another interesting thing to note, is the shirt-tearing. In Judaism (and this goes back to Old Testament characters such as Jacob and David), Keria is the ritual tearing of one's clothing as a sign of mourning.

...and I talk to much, but, I'm smart and I make you guys learn stuff!

And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage that you can bring
Love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind...

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Oh, oh
Walk on, walk on
What you got, they can't steal it
No, they can't even feel it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight

You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been
A place that has to be believed, to be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly, for freedom

Oh, oh
Walk on, walk on
What you got, they can't deny it
Can't sell it, or buy it
Walk on, walk on
You stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
And your heart, it breaks
You can only take so much

Walk on...
Walk on...

Home...
Hard to know what it is, if you never had one
Home...
I can't say where it is, but I know I'm going
Home...
That's where the hurt is...

And I know it aches
And your heart, it breaks
And you can only take so much

Walk on...
(Hooo)

Leave it behind
You got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you feel

All this you can leave behind

All that you reason, (it's only time)
(Love is a feeling on my mind)
All that you sense
All that you scheme
All you dress-up
All that you've seen
All you create
All that you wreck
All that you hate...

Favourite lyric:
And I know it aches
And your heart, it breaks
You can only take so much

Walk on...

<3 Beautiful

I think you're exactly right there. That's pretty much how I feel about the song.

Even though I know there are some people in this comm who can't stand this song, I personally adore it. I loved when they closed the Elevation tour concert I went to with this song, with the words of the last two verses projected around the arena. Love love love.

But... OMGWTF WHY HAVE I NEVER KNOWN OF THE EXISTENCE OF A VIDEO BEFORE? I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT! Predictably, I love it too XD

Now, go get some sleep! :)

Actually there are two videos. Three if you count the one MTV did with 9/11 footage.

Three if you count the Brazil version (which features Aung San Suu Kyi).

I've never seen the video either...

But I agree, this song is so eloquent in its simplicity. My favorite line:

And if your glass heart should crack...

I would agree with all that is being said about Walk On. For me - this is one of my all time favorite U2 songs. The words help keep me going when I feel that I can't go in a different way from SIAMYCGOO. When I feel that I "can't go on" I will always repeat And I know it aches
And your heart, it breaks/You can only take so much/Walk on...
. However, I have been known to repeat the last part of SIMAYCGOO as well -
and if the night runs over/and if the day won't last/and if your way should falter/along the stoney pass/it's just a moment/this time will pass. Great choice - I've be dying for this to be a SOTD!

ATYCLB saved my life, in a way, and this was one of the songs that really helped me. It's done so much for me and I don't even care how melodramatic that sounds. It's uplifting and spiritual and this is coming from someone who isn't the least bit spiritual usually. But this song is on a higher plane. The single version is even more gorgeous as well as the live stuff, obviously, and I sent it on a CD to my friend who was also going through a hard time. She loves it too!

So yeah. Can't really be beaten in many ways. ♥

Count me as another who hasn't seen this video! Love it.

And I love "Walk On" more than I can possibly put into words. It never fails me.

Definetly one of my favorite U2 songs of all time. They way they did it on the Elevation tour, blending the beginning with Peace on Earth, and the Halleluja's at the end, made it soem of the best 4 or 5 minutes of music I've ever heard.

"Walk On" is one of my very favourite songs. It's "All You Can't Leave Behind" that actually got me into U2 and encouraged me to check out their other stuff, I love that album so much. "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" is beautiful too. :)

The best damn track off ATYCLB. Everything from the lyrics to the music is absolute perfection. The impact of the song actually did not hit me until after I had ended a relationship about a year ago. While it was meant to be a song about political freedom, I see it as a song about freedom in general.

There are also moments where I see it as a love song as well. But that's only because I'm a sentimental, jaded old fool. ;)
