Song of the Day @ 12:20 pm

bonoffee:
Today's Song of the Day is...

Stand By Me (U2 & Bruce Springsteen) from the Rattle & Hum outtakes

I'm avoiding a big essay this week because I have one to hand in at uni instead, so this week I have chosen a fun, light-hearted track that some of you might not have heard, because I'm nice like that. :D

Anyway. The Rattle & Hum outtakes have a lot of good stuff in amongst some of the more dull footage and it's perfect for dipping into on a Sunday when you've nothing else to do but watch TV. This is one of my favourite moments of the lot. It's from the Philadelphia show 25/9/87, Bono's arm remains in a sling and he's trying to get someone else to play his guitar (which leads the world to breathe a sigh of relief). As you'll hear in at the beginning of the clip, Bruce Springsteen walks on stage when Bono asks if anyone wants to play his guitar, and I'm pretty sure it was an unplanned appearance as Bono looks as surprised as anyone to see him!

They launch into Stand By Me and it's a performance I really enjoy, every time I watch it, and I'm not usually a fan of collaborations at all. But it's just great fun. Bono's having a good time, Bruce is singing well, they've got one of the best songs in music history to mess around with - what else do you need?

There's added cute little bits, like when Bono asks Bruce if he's ever heard Edge play right before Edge's solo, and when Bono cries 'I'll always need you!' at Bruce during the song. It's impromptu, imperfect and it works well because, rather than in spite of, that fact. I'm not sure how good it is if you haven't seen the video and I'm just banging on about how great it is but I think it's worth a listen.

Lyrics are just Stand By Me lyrics (add in your own ad-libs, I hadn't time, sorry!) and the song's uploaded to YSI for your listening pleasure.

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, No I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

(Chorus)
And darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me,
Stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

YSI upload

I'll see you all next week for something with a bit more depth, lol!

The R&H outtakes is a bunch of black and white footage which wasn't used for the final film but it's out there, I got my copy on Ebay, it's like seven hours' worth of stuff, performances and backstage things like in the limo going to Graceland and when Bono hurts his shoulder and stuff!

Hmm I don't know! It's YouSendIt, it's supposed to just take you to the link but I don't know, sometimes it's weird... It takes me ages to upload things but I can have another go at the weekend if that'll help or I'll try to put it in the gmail account.

Could you put this into gmail, please? (Or some other uploading place?) I'm having problems, too....and I'm dying to hear it! U2 + Bruce Springsteen is pretty much my fandoms colliding into sheer joy. :D

I'll try to do it at the weekend - I always have issues with gmail, or rather my dial-up connection does, but I'll do my best or as you say, upload elsewhere!

I was thinking I'd never heard this performance (as I don't have the R&H outtakes), but it turns out it actually appears on the same bootleg CD where I found Dirty Old Town and that live version of Slow Dancing. Heh. Needless to say I haven't listened to it in years, though, so it's practically new to me.

Stand By Me is one of the best songs ever, so this has a headstart already. Which is just as well really, as I've never seen the appeal of Bruce Springsteen myself... I just don't get it. *shrug*  So the fannish aspect of this collaboration is lost on me and I can merely comment on how it sounds.

It's rather cool hearing Bono sing this song (well, it's pretty much *always* enjoyable when your favourite singer performs one of your favourite songs, isn't it?). The chorus is particularly great, with their enthusiastic harmonising there. Makes you wanna dance or clap or something!

LOL at Bono's "oh-ho-ho-ho!" half-singing half-laughing in the second chorus. *g*  His final whispered "Stand - by - ME!" after the guitar solo is just odd!  I'm rather impressed by the neat rhyming on "Through the rain / Through the snow / Through the wind / I will go" - they must have rehearsed that, even though it sounds totally improvised!  I'm also amused by "If you need somebody!" "I'LL ALWAYS NEED YOU!!". Slightly too overexcited there, Bono. *ggls*

Kind of irritated by them both fucking up some of the lyrics. ;p  But hey, it's not like this is supposed to be perfect - it's just a fun little live jam, and I'll bet it was certainly enjoyable enough in that sense. It's probably way better with the accompanying video anyway. :)

Hm -- I just thought I'd double check that the version on my CD is the same as yours, and it turns out this one is actually an audience recording, so you get to hear the crowd screaming their heads off and singing along!  I think I'll upload this version to the Gmail account. I'll put your one in there while I'm at it.

I'm not a fangirl of Bruce either - I have a couple of his 'low-fi' albums and I think they are brilliant, but I'm not a fan of the stadium bombast stuff and I don't fancy him, lol. I just love the performance for the fun factor (but I did realise there were a few Bruce fangirls lurking around here!).

Hee, you picked out all my fave parts there! Seriously, Bono got very excited to see Bruce come on! And yeah, the rhyming always takes me by surprise too, 'cause he clearly didn't expect Bruce to come on and yet they manage to get that out! Poor Bono's all trussed up in his shoulder-sling though, he needs to expend the energy somehow! ;)

Thanks for uploading to gmail, for some reason I can just never do it. I'd love to share the video with you, but until broadband arrives, no chance I'm afraid... :(
