U2 Ipod - problems? @ 05:11 pm

proops:
I'm currently hearin: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - New Year's Day

So I bought a U2-Pod (black and white) last August - late August.

It worked fine until November/December... started the freeze up and skip tracks and just act strange. It finally died, and I was able to send it in and they gave me a new one in January.

It's March, and the same things are happening again with a new ipod. It's really strange. My computer is totally virus free. Apple is currently sending me a new one because it died - again... this time in an even shorter about of time that the first one.

Has anyone ever had problems with their b&w u2ipod?

Thanks

It's not just U2 ipods, it's iPods in general that can have similar issues. Have you tried resetting it or installing the latest software update (or drastically, reformatting and starting over)? The iPod is essentially a harddrive, so like a computer things can get cluttered over time and it's good to have a spring cleanout every now and then.

Ah! That'll teach me to not read the post properly before I comment. *headdesk*

I don't know, sometimes iPods give people hideous issues, but I've never had any. I had my U2 B&W iPod for a year before it got stolen last month, and I never had a single issue with it. I'm sorry I can't help. It seems to be mostly luck of the draw and variation in the wear and tear that you put the iPod through, I guess.

yeah i know that, ive done all that. ive talked to people. ive seriously tried everything both times. someone told me that there was a defect in u2pods so i was just wondering... what i dont understand is why advirtise (and sell) an ipod that holds 5000 songs, when at 2000 it has a meltdown and dies? crazy apple.

I haven't seen anywhere that there is a specific defect with U2 iPods - the only difference between them and the regular 3G iPods is a different casing. The blood and guts is all the same :p

I don't want to sound like a crazy Apple freak here, but I think those who have had problems with their iPods are a very vocal minority. Many of my friends have iPods of all sorts and the main issues have been the shoddy batteries, which has always been a major shortcoming on Apple's part, but other than minor dings and the need to reformat once in a while, nothing. So, *shrugs* iPods wouldn't be at all popular if most users had problems with them.

I agree with you there. I've had a Mini for almost a year, and it hasn't given me any problems. But I hear so many people complaining about how sucky their iPods are... maybe you and I are just the lucky ones.

Perhaps we are! My U2 ipod was my pride and joy and I wouldn't have bothered upgrading at all if it hadn't been cruelly ripped from me, as it worked a treat. :-/ I just got my new video iPod last week, though, and I adore it to bits. *holds geek flag high*

Well, I have the video iPod - this being my third iPod since 2003 - and it has given me nothing but issues. Like freezing or turning off in the middle of playing. I have to reboot this sucker at least 2 to 3 times a week.

What's going on, Steve Jobs?

Most definitely. The problem I had the first time is that the battery was dying within 2 hours. Then it wouldn't connect to my computer anymore. So I took it to the Apple store and they gave me a new one right away. Exactly one month later, the iPod started skipping songs and then completely died on me with the sad iPod face and everything. Took it back again and they gave me a new one and bumped up my warranty a year from that date.
This one I've had now has been fine.

i had the same issue with the black and red u2 ipod... battery lasted about 4 hrs. sent it back, found out my warranty was 4 months less than i thought because it was a return item when i bought it from the store...someone else had bought it and returned it i guess for the same reason. i sent it off to apple (we dont have apple stores up here in canada) and they paid for everything, and its been fine since... mind you i havent used it hardly at all so i hope it lasts. but i do find that one of the cd's i put on it sounds so crappy.... its not the cd cause it sounds fine in my walkman.

hahaha yeah I'm freaking out just a teensy bit about that. Mine's fine and I got it in June, so... I hope, if it does have problems, it has them before warrenty runs up.

It definitely seems to be hit or miss with iPods--I got my 2nd-generation iPod over two years ago and it still works great, even after being dropped multiple times, cracking open (!), and generally being abused.

I don't have a U2 iPod but I have a first generation pink Mini that I got last Christmas and it's severely messed up. The battery only lasts about an hour now and the menu button doesn't work most of the time. ;___; It's also kind of peeling apart. XD

Maybe it's rebelling against being colored pink.

Sorry, I HAD to go there!

I have the black & red ipod and it works fine so far. Except the battery won't last longer than 4 hours, even when fully loaded -- which is annoying, since you can't just turn in another battery while loading the first one. So it's listening for a few hours and then I have to reload it. Plus, the quality of some cds I uploaded to the ipod is not the best, although the cds work fine in my cd player. mmmh.

I have a regular 20gb iPod that is well over a year old and it has frozen before a few times but all you have to do is just hold the center and play button at the same time for about 15 seconds and it comes back on, no problems. I have a color U2pod that i got for christmas and it's been working fine. It has frozen once but other than that i adore both of them! The U2pod is filled with nothing but U2!

My U2 ipPod has been doing the track-skipping as well, but I've found it manages to correct itself once I plug it into my iBook again. But still, it gives me the willies everytime it malfunctions like that. *shudders*
