SOTD : The first time... @ 01:34 am

inklingfair:
I'm currently feelin: my heart's stuck in my throat

One day (and it seems such a long time ago), I was sitting down in front of HBO waiting for some movie to begin. There was a concert of some old rock band that I knew very little about then. There were four of them: the lead singer was all in black and drenched in sweat; the bassist looked a lot like my father when he was younger; the drummer looked like he was in his twenties; the guitarist reminded me of Richard Gere.

I wasn't a rock fan then, and I wasn't paying much attention till this one song was sung. It changed my life forever:

(I'm going to try to remember how it was the first time... It was the intro that pulled me in. I thought the bass line was really sexy.)

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait (He's kneeling down, looking at the sea of hands before him. What is he looking for?)

And I'm waiting for you
With or without you
With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you (Ah, he's pulling up a girl from the audience. Who is that?)

With or without you
With or without you (What on earth? They're lying down!)

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away (This line made me catch my breath. They are so close, and she's singing along...)

My hands are tied
My body's bruised, got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose
And you give yourself away (Oh, God, he's looking at her.)
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away (Oh, God, he's putting his arm around her, he's putting her hand over his heart? Who is this girl? She can't be his girlfriend or anything...)

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

Oooh-oooooh.....

With or without you
With or without you

Oooh-oooooh.....

(By this time I had irrevocably fallen in love - and I didn't even know his name.

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you

The song is so beautiful. The guitar, the bassline, the beat, and the anguished vocals... After watching that, I felt like I was there, I was Bono, I was with the thousand-strong audience, I was the girl, drained but longing for more. My heart just leaped to my throat at the bit where the heart lights up and Bono clutches the girl to his chest like they were the only two people in a world that was coming to an end.

And I have never even seen them live...

So that's my story... And U2 and I lived happily ever after.

I feel so old. This was one of the songs that struck me when I got into them. In 1987.

Ha, I'm right there with you! I was all, "Oh, that video is sexy...oh, wait, she's talking about something from the Elevation tour, not the video from The Joshua Tree. I'm so old."

Thanks to 8linepoem for the YouTube link!  I don't watch the Boston DVD, so I needed my memory refreshed somewhat.

Eh... it's nowhere near being one of their best performances of this song (though to be fair, it's probably not one of their worst either). It doesn't help that I still can't watch anything from the Elevation Tour without feeling slightly sick. More than slightly, actually. :/  I will concede it's quite sweet how the girl looks like she's going to cry with ecstasy after Bono gives her a kiss!

I think someone else is gonna have to provide the gushing fangirly comments for this one, I just can't find anything enthusiastic to say about it. Now give me the Sydney Zoomerang version and it'll be a different story entirely. ;)

This is the song that made me fall in love with them. However, I didn't discover it as romantically as you did. My dad would play them in the car and I would make him replay this song alot. Of course I just HAD to say "bewind" instead of "rewind" and to this day he still says that.

Hee! That's too cute :) My dad doesn't share my taste, sadly. He's into The Eagles and Santana and Simon and Garfunkel, a generation behind U2.

that was beautiful. thank you.

i too, like you fell in love with this song, but like another who commented up higher, i feel so old. i fell in love to the black and white no audience version of this song - bono in cowboy hat and pony tail, the edge in ripped jeans and flat top black hat, adam i think still had his afro at that time - i cant be certain.... the light coming up from the floor under bono's feet - the shots of edge just being a calm lead guitar player, no flash and ego, just amazing playing and movements.. i've been in love for a very long time :)

Are you thinking of the original video? Adam had the crewcut at that point. =) But that sounds like the video, I still remember when it was all over MTV.

Wow, that was wonderful, thank you. Seems like everyone has a very powerful WOWY memory, and I'm no exception. It was this very version that made a very big impact on me. Not such a long time ago, in 2002 I was already happily listening to the two best of albums, and I was defintely in like with U2. And then, on one boring afternoon me and my family went to one of these huge department stores that I hate with a passion. But in the CD/DVD department this particular song from the Boston DVD was on on one of the TV screens there. It was the first time ever that I saw U2 perform and I was completely mesmerised. It was a moment of true emotion in the neon-lit zombie world and I think it contributed a LOT to me becoming obsessed with this band :D

That was beautiful.

I have plenty of U2 "moments" that made me fall in love with them - in leaps and bounds. I remember hearing WOWY in the soundtrack of "Looking For Alibrandi" - it was playing in a boy's funeral, and did I weep. It was also playing right before I got off the bus after an eight-hour trip home from the university, for Christmas break.

No shit.

Same thing happened to me when I first heard this song way back in the dark ages of the 80s when The Joshua Tree was the new album instead of the great old classic and I hadn't even seen the video. Heard this song once and I was irrevocably hooked.

... And once you're hooked, you want to hear everything else they've made, and you buy all the albums and watch all the videos, and tune in to Conan O'Brien, and talk about nothing else, and if you're lucky you see them in concert.

What a drug.
