Hello Hello!!

March 25th, 2006

Dear fellow SOTD post-ers... @ 01:32 pm

inklingfair:
I'm currently feelin: hopeful hopeful

Hi guys... Roll call!
Monday: But we haven't had this one for some time... sirensong984
Tuesday: stay_please
Wednesday: sapphires13
Thursday: bonoffee
Friday: volare
Saturday: er... I don't know who, really.
Sunday: (present!) inklingfair (Sorry if I got a bit confused as to who's posting when... correct me if I missed anyone or put someone on the wrong day. Someone posted a schedule of some sort January, but I've lost it.)

I had a little too much time on my hands today, so...

I've really been enjoying posting and reading all your song posts... Anyway, I was wondering if we could maybe have a little powwow of sorts at the start of every month/week/whatever to discuss the coming SOTDs. I don't know... so we could pick our songs in advance so nobody would feel bad if an SOTD idea got picked by someone else. Maybe canadanne can moderate and give advice, suggestions? (She was already kind enough to make a list of un-SOTD'd songs, so yay! for her.) And considering we've been SOTD-ing for a while, but we're all a bit disconnected (?) with each other. (If that's just me, ignore this).

Anyway, maybe some of you have some ideas to jazz up SOTD... to add interactivity, to involve the shy newbies, coax them to speak up... a quiz show, whatever. Fire away! *ducks*

I said a few weeks back SOTD is getting rather stale, but got shot down in flames for saying so. Tho volare's Flashback Friday's are good. Its only matter of time before there's no songs left to discuss. Its probably another three years til we've a new album to discuss.

I would suggest doing other artists & cover's of U2 tracks, quiz of the week, new single of the week etc. Other boards that have done SOTD have done that, when exhausted of all the own band stuff.

Btw annie is on her hols for the week. I'm sure she will chime in when she gets back.

To be honest, I agree with you. I didn't see your original post about this but that's what I've been thinking since about a month into SOTD. Given the kind of history that U2 has you'd think we could do better...

That's a very valid point. I still think something fresh and fun can come out of this, though. Maybe someone can make an online song-related treasure hunt or something to get more people involved. We do have to consider the ones who just joined this comm recently - they haven't heard everything.

Dear newbies and lurkers, this is your cue to make your opinion matter :)

I think maybe doing one or two songs per week might be better. Some of us who lurk are only able to check the community once in a while, and when there are new songs being posted daily, it doesn't leave much time for discussion. Even though we can go back to the old posts, they're, well, old, and it seems that everyone has moved on to the next thing for the next day.

Keeping a song "open" for a few days, or even a whole week, might get more people *conversing* instead of just dropping a short comment and never coming back.

Maybe?

I honestly don't know.

Good idea. Actually, I'm thinking of not posting for a while (meh, I've posted for this Sunday already!) so I'd have more time discussing the songs others post. :)

Not a bad idea at all. We'd have to redo the calendar a bit, but say, if there are six of us posting, and we do three SOTDs per week, we'd still each get to do one every two weeks, which would still be fine (and maybe even easier on us than each having to do one each week). Or if we did two per week, that'd be one SOTD each per three weeks, still works for me.

Being one of those newbies (relatively, anyway) I can see just looking at the SOTD list that I've missed out on pretty much every song there is with the exception of some early early early early U2 and mixes. What has stopped me from discussing in the ones that I have been around for is that I just don't have anything to say about those songs, whether it's because I haven't heard it or what I would say has already been said by several people or the song holds no interest for me.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on it at this early hour. They might be pointless thoughts, but that's what I can give at 10am.

PS: Looking through the list of songs that have been SOTD'd, I'm rather surprised no one did Pop Muzik.

I'm still quite new to the U2 fandom (of that level), so I see what you mean. That's why I prefer posting the more familiar songs - I'm not tired of them yet. But I try to post a different version if I'm repeating songs.

And to be honest, I haven't heard Pop Muzik yet.

It's not that I'm new to U2 fandom (it's crazy to think how long I've been into them) just new to the community.

Oh. I've liked U2 only since around 2002, but wasn't yet - er - obsessed then. It's only since I got my own PC and a phone line that I started researching and stuff and got entirely blown away ;D

Saturdays are technically mine ("wayback weekend") but I've been of late either away from my computer most of the day or had tech troubles. Blagh. If someone's wanting to take it I don't object, or I can try to kick my own arse a little harder.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I love your posts :D

But maybe we can do something like what spicedrum suggested above and just do two or three a week so we don't run out too fast and more people can have time to discuss each song.

Or I just might be taking all this a tad too seriously, hee! Bottomline, I just want to enjoy the SOTDs.

As a SOTD poster, I'm somewhat new to the U2 fandom. I've only been into them for around 18 months, and have been in this community less than a year. A lot of the songs that were covered during my first several months here, I hadn't heard yet at the time, and so I didn't really got to participate much at the time. That's probably why I tend to choose songs that have already been covered.
Another reason is that I mostly listen to album tracks (and they've pretty much all been covered). I have a small handfull of B-sides, but have been purposefully slow about obtaining them, so that if we have another few years before the next album, I'll be able to find a new (new to me anyway) song or two every few months to tide me over.
However, I'm willing to take suggestions. I have the unique gift of being able to find a ton to say about just about any song. So, if anyone has any B-sides they'd like to see covered, speak up (and upload!) and I can keep them in mind.
Another thought that I've had though, is that we could work on covering the concert video release versions of songs. Such as I did a couple of weeks ago with the PopMart Mexico version of HMTMKMKM, and Bonoffee and you have done recently with Helter Skelter and Bad from Rattle & Hum. Those are fun, and they give you an excuse to pop in the DVD. Maybe we could pick a particular release (Elevation Boston for example, as I haven't watched that one in a while, and have been meaning to), and each pick a song from it to do (that is, if all of us have the DVD) and do all of those songs within the week (and call it Elevation Boston week, or whatever). And then maybe a few weeks later, we can do a different video release for a week.

I love video SOTDs, and I'm planning to continue with the screencapped SOTDs every other Sunday, maybe. However, it is quite hard to coordinate every week, and it might somehow take away the spontaneity/randomness of SOTD. :)

I think we're doing OK, and if anybody else wants to do SOTD games, they can just post whenever.

So, that said, (because I'm about your "age" in the U2 fandom) I think there's plenty of material left to tide us over till the next album. And plenty to talk about. Besides, they might make new music videos (for HTDAAB tracks), etc. You know. The boys never seem to keep still. ;D

Random thoughts...

(Link)
Well, maybe it's just me but I still totally disagree about SOTD getting stale. I think it's as much fun as it's ever been, perhaps *especially* now that we're left with lesser known gems that people aren't so familiar with. And we're nowhere near running out of relevant song ideas just yet.

I also still completely oppose the idea of turning it into a discussion about other artists. That's not what Song Of The Day is about. If people want such a feature, call it something else. Though I'm not sure it would be particularly appropriate for this community anyway, it'd be pretty darn off-topic - I for one would quickly get tired of random Coldplay posts (or whatever) clogging up the community pages. (Heck, somebody even created a separate community for that, which apparently never caught on.)

I wouldn't argue if people wanted to cut it down to two or three SOTDs per week - you've probably noticed I struggle to keep up with all the posts, and I hate the thought of skipping any!

The issue of repeating songs is a tricky one. On the one hand, it would be great for all the newer community members if we re-did the album tracks and stuff, because they missed out on their chance to comment when the songs were originally covered. You'd probably get a much bigger response to posts about the familiar hits than the more obscure stuff. On the other hand, as soon as you start repeating songs, you get community veterans complaining that it's becoming stale. I'm really not sure how you can try to please everybody - though I think your idea is a good one, where you're looking for different angles on the songs we've already done.

As for jazzing up SOTD, I think you guys are already doing a great job of that. The posts with video screencaps are really fresh and fun. volare's early demos are always interesting. It's cool how the various posters have been picking out their own different themes and niches. And I think all the songs are being uploaded to Gmail/YSI, so it's not like people aren't given the chance to hear the tracks for themselves. I don't know what else you can possibly do to encourage participation. Maybe somebody ought to make a general "Introduction to Song Of The Day" kind of post, so that the shy newbies understand what exactly the feature is all about? Maybe they've been seeing the posts and not realising they're supposed to comment with their own thoughts. It could be that it just needs a little explicit promotion (including what the Gmail account is for, maybe some history of how it all started, etc).

I'm sure there are tons of unrelated games we can play when SOTD has run its course (or even in parallel with SOTD), but I really don't see the need to mess around with the original format too much, when there's plenty of life in the old beast yet.

...And after all that, I neglected to respond to the original question!

I doubt you'd be able to get everyone agreeing on their song selections in advance - I know certain posters tend not to decide on their choice until the very last minute, and it's hell trying to coordinate regular meetups on the Internet, anyway. Plus I suspect people won't want to ruin the element of surprise. I guess it's just tough luck if anyone gets robbed of their chosen song... it's probably a bad idea to write your SOTD post too far ahead of time!  Maybe it's best to send everyone an email if you're really desperate to ensure nobody else picks the song you've got your eye on?  I don't think it'd be necessary to have anyone moderating such discussions, least of all me (for I'm naught but a humble commenter / archiver!). I'm more than happy to suggest songs if anybody gets stuck for ideas, though!  I think only about half of the posters asked to see my list when I offered it.

I'm also just wondering if sirensong984 is planning to continue with her slot or not, as it seems like forever since she posted anything. If she's no longer interested or available, perhaps there's somebody else out there who'd enjoy having a go?  If there's one thing SOTD needs more than anything else, it's a team of enthusiastic posters who've got something to say!

Hee! Me and my earnest SOTD geekiness.

Anyway, I think you're right - there still ARE plenty of songs (I have that list) and I guess we just have to make that intro post so newbies will speak up.

Are you up to making that? If you're too busy, I'd be happy to oblige and make a little sort of "History of SOTD" thing this Sunday, instead of my usual song. :)

I don't think it's my place to do so, really - you'd probably be a better representative than me, if you're happy to do it!

I reckon these are the main points worth covering:

~ Intro along the lines of "For anybody who's new to the community and wondering what this Song Of The Day thing is all about, here's a brief rundown..."

~ How it started (hue126 came up with the idea about a year ago and various other community members have volunteered to carry it on).... include a list of the current six posters?

~ How it works - the poster of the day picks a random U2 song and gives some background info / analysis to start the discussion

~ Everyone is welcome (and encouraged!) to comment with their own feelings about the song, whether positive or negative - e.g. highlight their favourite parts of the track, or explain what they personally associate it with

~ zoostation created a Gmail account that everyone in the community can access to share the lesser known songs (and this is how you get there...)

~ Songs sometimes get repeated for the benefit of newer members who couldn't share their thoughts first time around

~ You can browse the Song Of The Day archive to read what people have written in the past (the link can be found in the left-hand column of the community page)

That's about everything I can think of!  It just needs to be made clear that people needn't be shy about commenting, it's more fun and interesting when the posts get a bigger response. :)

LOL, how about we copy-and-paste this instead? :D That's basically covered everything, I guess. Will do.

And yeah, I don't know what happened to sirensong984's day (Monday). Do you know her? Shall Mondays be up for grabs? Maybe we ought to ask.
