One in the UK chart @ 12:33 am

canadanne:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious

U2 and Mary J Blige appear to be at #19 in the singles chart from downloads alone. I wonder how high it will manage to climb when the CD sales are added in?

Am I allowed to say that I morally object to that song? :| Or rather, that version of the song. I hope it doesn't get much higher.

I know what you mean... in an ideal world, nobody would mess with that song, ever. I'm surprised by how little this version has offended me, though - I'm pretty neutral towards it, and I think I'd be chuffed if it did well in the charts. It's an outrage that the original version didn't even make the top 5, so at least if this one did, it would go some way towards making up for it! (She's been promoting it on every TV show going, and it seems to be getting a fair amount of radio airplay too, so it may well be bought by people other than just U2 fans.)

I guess I'm just thankful that it's a vaguely decent artist and not somebody from the very bottom of the chart pop barrel, and at least U2 appear on it instead of letting her take all the credit...

Yeah, I suppose it could be worse from a critical point of view, but I'm definitely not a fan of Mary J Blige and so she's not really any different from whatever other artists, to me, because I don't like her style. The performance at the Grammys wrecked any chance I'd maybe have had (and it was pretty slim to start with) of liking that version, because to me she screamed it and that doesn't inject any emotion into a song like One. Bono wasn't entirely blameless, either, the whole thing looked lazy and boring, except for Edge's cutey stampy thing. ;)

I guess it just annoys me that some people will not have heard the original, perhaps, and think this is the right way to do things, lol! I just... I really don't like it at all and when it comes on the radio I always turn over, and my mum thinks I've flipped. Lol! *shrugs*

For sure it could have been worse, it could have been Westlife. ;)

No, I totally hear what you're saying, I feel that way about most covers. I wish people would leave classic songs alone.

Oh God, don't even SUGGEST it, they might hear you! Seriously, I spent the weekend worrying about seeing this year's WL tour setlist, I was convinced they were going to stick in a U2 cover and make me cry. But they didn't! I'd kill them if they ever did. All we have to do now is kill Journey South... have you heard them butchering I Still Haven't Found...? I wouldn't have except my little sister likes them and has the album. Eeeeek! One of the best and most emotional songs reduced to karaoke mush.

Ack, I didn't know Journey South did a U2 cover. I saw them once on CD:UK and was fortunate enough to have the fast-forward button at my disposal... just how many identical drippy reality show graduates ARE there, and why don't they *ever* write their own songs?

Oh, it gets worse! On the actual show one week they did Angel Of Harlem (murdered it, I cried) and then I Still Haven't Found... a few weeks later, as well as for their initial audition. And when they got booted out they played One over their montage of 'best bits' clearly ignoring any meaning the song actually has, lol. And on the X-Factor tour, they did a U2 medley which was described in the paper review I read as 'an appalling trawl through U2's back catalogue'. I only know this stuff because my sister watches recordings of the show all the time and loves them, lol! I knew one day we'd get some who were U2 fans...

Vile. I seem to recall hearing quite a few remarks about U2 songs being butchered on those TV shows over the years. Yet another good reason to avoid them all like the plague!!
