sapphires13:
I'm currently feelin: calm calm
I'm currently hearin: Night and Day - U2

What with the upcoming DVD release, and the fact that this song has never been covered as a Song of the Day, I felt it was all too appropriate that I cover it:

"Night and Day" from the Red Hot and Blue album

Originally by Cole Porter, this song was covered by U2 in 1990 for the Red Hot and Blue album, a tribute to Cole Porter, which featured various artists, with proceeds going to AIDS research.
I haven't been a U2 fan all that long, and the first version of this song I heard was actually John Barrowman and Kevin Kline singing it in the movie-musical, De-Lovely, a Cole Porter biopic. It wasn't until a few days after seeing the movie with my brother, that he asked me "Did you know that U2 covered one of the Cole Porter songs in that movie?" And well, I naturally preferred the U2 version ;P

This song is truly an Achtung Baby preview. It's dark, and Bono is singing in his Fly voice. It must've been pretty strange to have been a U2 fan at the time. The Joshua Tree and LoveTown tours are over, and you're just waiting to see what the band is going to do next... and then Night and Day is released. Must've been a bit of a shock. Night and Day is actually darker in feel than most of Achtung Baby, musically though, it reminiscent of The Fly, Zoo Station, and even Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car.
Even if you were to remove Bono's vocals, there's something very ominous feeling about the music itself. I can't quite put my finger on what it is, either.
A video was also recorded for the original Red Hot and Blue VHS video release (and directed by Wim Wenders), and will be included on the forthcoming DVD rerelease (see above link). The video, like the song is rather dark, and can be viewed here on YouTube.
The video itself is something of an anomaly itself. Here we have U2 still with their late 80s look (Bono's suspenders, Edge's bandana), but their early 90s sound. Not a bad video though (except the part with the razor blade, which freaks me out). Bono sort of reminds me of Michael Hutchence in this video, hmm.

The tomtom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tick of the eye of the clock
You're standing up against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the rain drops
When the summer shower's through
So a voice within me
Keeps repeating
You...

Night and day
You are the one
Only you beneath the moon
And under the sun
Whether near to me or far
It's no matter, baby, where you are
I think of you
Night and day

Day and night
Why is it so?
That this longing for you follows
Wherever I go
In the roaring traffic boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Night and day

Night and day
Under the hide of me
Though such a hungry yearning
Burning inside of me
This torment won't be through
'Til you let me spend my life
Making love to you
Day and night
Night and day

Night and day

Night and day
Under the hide of me
Oh, such a hungry yearning
Burning, burning inside of me
This torment won't be through
'Til you let me spend my life
Making love to you
Day and night
Night and day

Night and day
Night and day
Night and day

Night, in night, in night and day
And in night, in night, in the night and day
Night and day
Night... and day

(Got to, got to)
Gonna go up and do it
Gonna be loving you
How I'm [gonn]a miss ya baby
Saving it all up

It's a brilliant and often unsung song of theirs. Great choice for a topic!

Weird. I swear I remember this being talked about before...

The song itself was unbelievably sexy. Smoky and desperate.
When the video came out, it was THE. HOTTEST. THING. EVAR.

I wore out my first cassette tape years ago, scrounged another one, wore that out. what with all the rewind-stop-rewind...

heh. was the key moment of the video for me....

Definitely one of their creepier songs. Listen to the Sinatra version and then this and it's all the stranger.

I love that they decided to use the old drum beat from the Boomerang b-sides... sometimes, I get the feeling that the band revisited the dancier material from the Unforgettable Fire days for inspiration at the start of the nineties (i.e. Alex Descends Into Hell For A Bottle Of Milk/Korova 1).

Also a big fan of that huge BOOM in the background every six measures, as well as that incredible scream Bono lets out near the end.

I remember seeing this video for the first time, after being a fan of U2 since like the October days, and just feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise.

Oops...hit enter to soon...

I meant to add that it was amazing hearing such a dark sound from them. I think I got goose bumps both from the sexiness of the video itself and from noticing that the band was definitely on the brink of crossing over into doing something completely different aesthetically.

As I mentioned recently, in my opinion the Steel String Remix (from the One single) is by far the best version of Night And Day, so I'll save most of my general comments for the day that remix hopefully gets featured in its own right!  For now I'll just concentrate specifically on the RH&B version, and of course the accompanying video...

<random fact>
I still have the transcript of a Yahoo Chat that Bono and friends took part in (during Adam's 40th birthday party!) on 12th March 2000. At one point supermodel Helena Christensen stepped in for a few minutes, and was asked to name her favourite U2 song, to which she responded: "Night And Day. It was on Red Hot And Blue ... Oh, God, I can go on, but I must say Night And Day, that was the most beautiful version of that song ever."
</random fact>

Totally agree with Helena - my Mum owns copies of the song as performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, and IMO neither of them comes anywhere close to U2's rendition. The Ella one was alright (but not really my cup of tea), the Sinatra one completely dire. Of course I may be partly biased as I wasn't familiar with the song before I heard U2's cover, but I really think they breathed a whole new life into it, and made it *sexy* like it ought to be. It's hard to believe such sultry lyrics had ever been wasted on bland, passionless recordings... trust U2 to recognise and emphasise its best qualities!

I think that's a good description you gave, calling it an "Achtung Baby preview". It does have the same dark beauty as that album, and it's a great example of the thrilling dance-flavoured rock that would become familiar to U2 fans throughout the 90s. My kinda music!

This particular version has a much creepier feel than the Steel String Remix, thanks to that booming intro and ominous horror-movie chords. Which is pretty cool, and contrasts nicely with the softness of the first "Night and day..." line — the sonic turmoil seems to mirror Bono's angst over this elusive lover, with pain and pleasure in equal measure. Overall it kind of makes Bono sound like a dangerous stalker, which is interesting because I'm pretty sure that wasn't the original intention of the song. And the weird razorblade video certainly adds to that effect!  (Ugh, that part *really* makes me wince - I'm seriously squeamish. :p  How fantastically evil does Bono look during the "burning... burning, inside of me..." section, though, when he comes over to seduce the camera?  Remind you of anyone....?)

But yeah, I don't think this version sounds as clean and lush as the later remix, and I prefer it feeling purely amorous without the sinister overtones. I want to dirty dance to it, not slit my wrists. ;p

I remember waiting, not so patiently, for the video for this song to come out. I was not disappointed. It is HOT, HOT, HOT and I think U2's version of the song is hot too.
