Hello Hello!!

Essentials. @ 06:51 pm

We have already had the posts on "essential" U2. What our opinions are, the ideal introduction CD for non-fans, etc. etc. etc. Today I stumbled upon iTunes U2 essentials. They have 25 "basics", 25 "next steps", and 25 "deep cuts". Basically the first consists of singles, the last of tracks a non-fan couldn't name. Relisted here, for your blogging pleasure....

Deep Cuts
So Cruel
Party Girl (Under a Blood Red Sky Version)
Beautiful Day (from Slane 2001)
A Sort of Homecoming (WAIA version)
A Celebration
Streets (from the Please single)
Sunday Bloody Sunday (from If God Will Send His Angels single, Edge version)
All Because of You (from Under the Brooklyn Bridge)
11 O'Clock Tick Tock
Silver and Gold
Indian Summer Sky
A Day Without Me
I Fall Down
Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)
Spanish Eyes
Everlasting Love
The Three Sunrises
Satellite of Love
The Wanderer
If You Wear That Velvet Dress (from a blues/jazz compilation album, with only Bono representing U2)
I Will Follow (live, Boston 1981)
Love Rescue Me (from Angel of Harlem single)

I was really hoping the responses wouldn't be about what is missing, for that list endless. More about shifting, or what doesn't belong on these lists (in our humble opinions). I detest "Party Girl", I'm sorry. ;-) Like I mentioned, I adore the fact that Wire is on the list, but would probably list it as a deep cut. Same with UTEOTW, maybe a next step, it wasn't that big of a song in the Achtung Baby heyday was it? I did not know such a version of "Velvet Dress" existed. But it seems to be popular among the crowd, and the 30-second blurb was nice. I may have to purchase that one. I'm not sure I care for the repeat of "All Because of You" within the list. Is the live version that much different from the studio track? (Is the song really that worthy to begin with?) One commenter mentioned a dislike in "Vertigo". I'm not sure these essentials list are meant to be "best of" compilations, but more like "to get a grasp of this band, listen to these tracks." It takes a little from here, a little from there. Like it or not, Vertigo was the hit first single from the latest album, spawned a new breed of iTunes commercials, had a helluva lot to do with the first "designer" iPod. So while it isn't teh best song evah, I do believe it belongs on the list. I would bump "Out of Control" up to the basics list, as it is one of five songs Bono claims is their first single. So I would probably throw in "I Will Follow" as well, and ditch the live version under deep cuts.

move "City of Blinding Lights" up to The Basics, take out "Vertigo." sorry, "Vertigo" isn't that great.

I am divided over whether to bump up CoBL, and simply admire its inclusion. To me, it is HTDAAB, defined. But to the masses, that definition would be Vertigo. Re-read the post for my thoughts. :-)

No Love Is Blindness??
Date:April 14th, 2006 03:09 am (UTC)
Nope. That is the only song that came to mind immediately as an absence. So I'm with ya...

I take it that's the brilliant Jools Holland version of IYWTVD?
Date:April 14th, 2006 03:10 am (UTC)
Yes. I suppose I'll have to purchase that one, eh? Re-read, I added my own comments. ;-)

"Ultraviolet"? No? Sadness.
Date:April 14th, 2006 03:11 am (UTC)
Hmmm. Not sure I hear you on that one. I understand Ultraviolet is a favorite. That whole closing trio (Ultraviolet, Acrobat, Love Is Blindness) was very swoon-worthy when I first got into Achtung, Baby. But the more I listened to it, the messier Ultraviolet seemed, and the less I seem to like it... sometimes I feel that way about Acrobat, too.

I think it's a decent list, though the 'deep cuts' selections aren't as obscure as I would have expected. And if that 'Velvet Dress' version is the one with Jools Holland, I just did the dance of joy. Whee! I'll go check now.

Some are more obscure than others, I agree. What would you consider "obscure"? (Not necessarily something you'd add to the list, though.)

Ditto. I think it's a logical representation of their material from iconic to deeper cuts, but it might not be how I would personally do it. And I'm with you also on having just more real B-sides for the "deep cuts". I'd rather expose someone to "Hallelujah, Here She Comes" or "Summer Rain" rather than a live versions of well known songs.

I agree with your comment on Wire. That song drives me crazy (in a good way).

*high-five* for Wire-love. Best track on TUF!! .... after Bad.

I'd get rid of all the repeats (except the Edge solo of Sunday Bloody Sunday), add Jesus Christ from the Sun Studio Sessions to the Deep Cuts, and switch Bad and Stay, and switch UTEOTW and Walk On. Beautiful Day should be in the basics, but I don't know what to get rid of to fit that in. I Will Follow should be in Next Steps or maybe even The Basics.

LOL. I feel like I just played the shell game by reading your comment. (The one with the bead or whatever under a shell and the guy switches and flops them around and you're supposed to figure out which one still has the bead.) But once I figured it all out... I think I have to completely agree with you. Although you didn't need to keep even 25s ;-)

Hmm, I definitely agree on the basics list. That's a very good primer for those who aren't familiar with U2 (there are people who aren't?).

I have serious issues with "Gone" and "Walk On" being on the Next Step though. However, that is purely a prejudiced response as they are two of my favorite songs.

With the exception of the live version of popular songs, I would tend to agree that many of the Deep Cuts are not widely known/easily recognizable songs.

All in all, interesting lists on the part of iTunes.

PS: I started the Essentials post. Gimme props, worship me, or completely ignore me. ;) (Naturally, the third option is not the preferred one).
