Hmmmm, let's have a gander then....

Well, for me I don't think anything will ever top the ZooTV performances (Sydney in particular, obviously), because that's just absolutely mindblowing - both musically and visually, with the burning crosses and everything. I'm also a huge fan of the performance on the Rattle & Hum album which is similarly fierce and rocking.

Having said that, it's hard to criticise this version. Bono's fragile vocals are distracting, as ever, and maybe it goes on a bit.... but I must admit it's still pretty powerful!  Musically it's as good as any other version. The gun-themed intro tape does its job excellently, it's very disturbing indeed. :|  And what a *rant* from Bono on this occasion!!  He didn't seem to need any teleprompters there.... whoa. The reddish lighting on his face really emphasises the anger and menace, and I agree with you and inklingfair about the effectiveness of that final gesture!  My other favourite moment is probably the crazed "Threeeeee hundreeeed!!" bit, with Bono wildly swinging the spotlight round in circles - way cool!  I can't say I actually remembered seeing any of this stuff, so it was worth watching again.

On a partly unrelated note, I've just noticed that I now automatically expect to hear "When Johnny comes marching home again, hoorah, hoorah..." as the second chorus ends. How weird - my whole mental map of the song has changed!
