Underrated/Overlooked? @ 09:07 pm

rockingthemike:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious
I'm currently hearin: Please(Single Strings Version) - U2

Last weekend I asked what everyone thought was the most overrated U2 track. This weekend I ask: what is the most under-rated/overlooked song in U2's discography? This could be a single that's rarely played on radio, a forgotten album track or a b-side. It need not be your favorite either. Looking forward to everyone's answers. Edit as per suggestion by canadanne, it can also be a track that is generally 'slagged' by friends. :)

Enthusastically seconded! I was just coming in to nominate Exit myself. I love both the Rattle and Hum movie version and the JT version. It's so *brooding*.

Aw, c'mon people! No discussions? Gimme reasons!

I dunno if this counts as under-rated, but perhaps under-discussed, or overlooked. I'll have to cast my lot with God, Part II. Now, as my U2 Fancode says, if caught in a fire, and a decision between AB and JT, AB is it, hands down. But sometimes I get in the mood for 80s U2, and I head straight for this one. The most under-rated song, from an under-rated album.

I like how it alludes to so many things (first and foremostly, John Lennon, though I have yet to hear the inspiration for 'part II'). It has some of Bono's best lyricwork, the plays on words. "Kick the darkness till it bleeds daylight," or "the rich stay healthy, the sick stay poor." The guitar riff is killer. There is no soaring solo (which is very un-Edge, to begin with), that riff is enough. Adam is constant. For people not musically-inclined, the bass part is probably the hardest to decipher, imo. But here he lets himself be known, thundering away. And Larry's not into his cymbals so much, I just noticed that. That's gotta be something.

Excellent choice, stay_please! I was actually considering that song as well, but opted for another one (which I'll reveal later). I'm with you on preference for AB over JT, but "God Part II" seems to be an interesting bridge between the two musical styling (especially when paired up with "Night and Day").

Either "Red Hill Mining Town" or "All I Want Is You."

Both deserve way more attention from the radio stations.

I heard All I Want Is You in its entirety on the biggest commercial radio station here, a few weeks ago. It nailed my jaw to the floor, because usually it's something they really don't do. Sometimes they even cut off the end of songs like One. And yes, they need way more attention and airplay.
