I'm currently feelin: amused amused
I'm currently hearin: Elevation (live from Chicago) - U2

Okay, the Boston DVD must be like, my favourite full-length U2 video or something, because I almost chose yet another performance from it for SOTD. I decided to restrain myself, however, and chose a song from elsewhere.

"Elevation" from the Live from Chicago DVD

I was watching this a couple of weeks ago, and having a nice time laughing at Bono during it. Now, don't get me wrong, I love and admire the man, but he's also a bit of a goofball and easy to make fun of. But in this performance, he's having trouble with his voice, which shouldn't be as laughable as him doing something ridiculous and goofy on purpose, and yet I laugh. I am a terrible person XD
I won't spend half of this write-up complaining about Hamish Hamilton's spastic shots, but I will say, I'm glad this imperfect performance of Elevation was used in the final cut, rather than shelving it and using a (probably) more perfect performance from the other night of filming. I like imperfections in concert videos. It helps relay that live feel, because when you actually do go see a show, it is live, and anything could happen. Another prime example of imperfections in the final-cut of concert releases would be Desire from the PopMart Mexico DVD. First he forgets the words, then he tries to sing La Bamba instead, finally he gives up completely and stops the song, laughing. It's great.
Anyway, I'll stop babbling and get to the song. I'm really not a fan of Elevation being performed this way. The first half of the song becomes an audience sing-along with barely any music, just those repetitive few notes. Bono's having trouble singing from the get-go, it's first notable when he seems to completely choke on the word "corner".
And now we get to the first chorus. Elevation is one of those rare songs where Larry sings. At least, I can see him singing during the chorus, but I can't really hear him at all. Edge is singing too, and gets the "excavation"s all to himself. The audience gets the "elevation"s. Adam just gets to stand there a little longer, looking pretty.
Finally, after all of that, the song really begins, and Adam and Larry finally get to play. After the next verse and chorus, Bono does some whoo-hoos, then steps away, letting the audience handle the rest. He goes for a drink of water, presumably to sooth his throat. And then... he doesn't quite get back to the microphone in time for the middle eight. This is the part I laugh at. Bono quickly dropping the water and running back to the microphone. Realizing what he's done, he stands at the microphine half smiling, and then starts coughing. He manages the final two lines of the middle eight, and then the best part of the performance happens: "Help me. I got a frog in my throat." I love that man to pieces XD
And then one more chorus, ending with a nice round "EL EH VAY SHUUUUUUUUUUN!" and The Edge explodes. Talk about some mean, powerful guitar playing. Edge is reminding us why the electric guitar was invented. Bono knows he totally can't compete, so he lets the audience handle the rest of the whoo-hoos (or you know, it could be his throat again =P)

Sugartown, Chicago

High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At the corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse

You elevate my soul
I've got no self-control
Been digging like a mole
Now, going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly so high
Elevation

A mole digging in a hole
Digging up my soul
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly so high
Elevation

A star lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you can educate my mind
Explain all these controls
Can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation

A mole digging in a hole
Digging up my soul
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly so high
Elevation

Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you
Help me, I got a frog in my throat
And

A mole digging in a hole
Digging up my soul
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly so high
Elevation

I was there. We were so much louder than the DVD lets on...we were drowning out the band at times...damn you Hamish.

I've actually heard a boot of that performance, and my reaction was: "How does this have better sound quality than the DVD?!"

Yeah, there's really good audio recordings of May 9th and May 12th (especially the 12th).

There's not much audience noise on the official DVD mix (nor much Edge, either, let's be honest). It's not a Rush concert, if we needed a crystal-clear recording, we could listen to the studio albums...it's about the energy, which I feel didn't quite make it to the DVD even though it was in abundance if you were actually at the shows.

If you haven't seen it, the May 9th audience DVD is well worth seeking out, if nothing else than for an alternate perspective on what went down that night.

Hi, I just wanted to give you a small insignificant FYI. The reason Bono is having some problems with his voice is not that he was coughing is that he was trying not to laugh.

I have this (incredibly silly) hat that I wore to the show, wore it on both days and actually got to talk to several crew members while wearing it (some even took pictures). Well, here is the picture of when Bono saw the hat on May 9th, and you can see during the DVD his reaction and now know why the "frog" comment. *grins*

And yes, I was ecstatic they kept that version on the DVD and not the MAy 10th.

I was about to write that I was just as a terrible person as you, then I saw dirty_woman's post, whcih makes it all the more awesome and funny, though from a different angle.
I prefer Elevation done the 'normal' way but it's not like I don't dig it this way. Audience participation - always good.

What is the community's opinion on the rest of the Live from Chicago DVD? I've wanted to buy it for a while at Best Buy but I only got to see snippets of it when they played it on the display plasma tv and home theater system.

Good show, very distracting visuals like the Elevation DVD...

The "deluxe edition" isn't much to write home about for the price...it's worth the $14 or whatever for the basic version, the deluxe edition is just for completists, IMO.

Yeah, I agree about the way Elevation has been performed on this tour... for sure there's always fun in audience participation, but the whoo-hoo's do kinda drag on for wayyy too long (and the crowd never actually sing them right, either!). Plus those teasing false starts are just sort of annoying, you're desperate to start bouncing like crazy but you've got to wait through yet another verse before you can do so - argh!

Still, few things are as fun as an "EL-EH-VAY-SHUN!" moment, it's always suitably explosive when it finally comes. ;)  This is one of the few songs that was actually performed better on the last tour than on this one (how can you beat that Influx Mix build-up?), but I'm certainly glad they kept it in the setlist because it's my joint favourite song off ATYCLB. It's so joyful and energetic and the guitar rocks!

The "frog in my throat" line is so much more brilliant now that dirty_woman has explained the in-joke... it kind of made me cringe when I thought it was just Bono having vocal problems, but now it's funny. :D
