Disregard The Comment for SOTD @ 06:06 pm

hue126:
I wanted to know what the rest of the community thinks of the Vertigo 2005 DVD from Chicago, in a post related to the SOTD. I've been sort of eyeing it at Best Buy for like six months, deciding to buy it then avoiding buying it. I like the some of the camerawork and the performances are pretty solid. It seemed to lessen in quality with the ballads, but being in a huge arena like that, sometimes that's a detriment to any band. Even one as great as U2. But I didn't watch enough of it to get a full impression. So I need your guys' help...

i have the dvd because it was a gift. would i go and buy it myself? i dont know.. probably not. i enjoy listening to it, i love the little imperfections of the actual show and band, and the fact that they kept some of the 'shit gig'(in bono's own words) in as part of it and didnt make it perfect, but.... i really hate the camera work (except for NYD when they shot from above edge and i finally got to confirm what i thought- i could play that piano bit with one hand lol). but yeah, i hate the camera angles... its not like being there. I"ve seen a zoo tv dvd and you felt like you were standing in the front row. this one doesnt stay on any one band member long enough to even get a decent drool in. for me thats my only complaint though. (except i thought the 'extras' were kinda lame - most especially the 'secret camera' footage in black and white or night vision camera - whats the point of that eh?

Personally I like it, just to have a record of the Vertigo show. As far as camera work and such goes, well, there are some annoying shots and a lot of too-quick cuts, but I think that's going to happen in any show.

I've heard that the bonus DVD isn't worth spending money on though, but I can't attest to that as I don't have it.

At least, any show directed by Hamish Hamilton.

I've got it and I love it. I don't really understand why people don't like it, but maybe I'm not seeing the problems they do. Anyway, I would definitely get it! There are some cute moments on there and the quality of the video is excellent.

If I turn the TV itself off and just listen to it, it's a lot more bearable. If I try to watch it, sometimes I actually get a little overwhelmed by all the cuts, the lack of any chance to really focus on anything long enough before the next shot, etc. There aren't enough full stage shots to really show what the crowd could see, timing is off so you miss certain parts of songs that would really look better visually if a different angle or shot was used, and so on.

Mainly, I can't stand Hamish Hamilton's directing.

Hmm, not my favourite U2 concert video, but it's not all bad. I think part of the reason I don't like it as much (besides Hamish Hamilton's spasticness) is that I'm just burned out on HTDAAB. There are a few performances on the DVD that I watch over and over again (Electric Co., Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still, Zoo Station, The Fly), and some I almost never watch (City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, One).
In the long run, I'm glad I bought it, but only twice have I sat and watched it all the way through. I think I'd enjoy watching it a lot more if they were doing different songs =P
As for the extra disc? The surveillance cuts are really just not watchable. The documentary is interesting, but would be a ton better if they'd done more stuff with the band and less stuff with the fans. Plus it induced my phobia of Gavin Friday... I do LOVE the SYCMIOYO alternate video though. LOVE. And as that video still doesn't seemed to have surfaced on the internet or anywhere else, I'm glad I paid extra for the extra disc, if only for it. Otherwise, I'd wish I'd just gotten the regular edition.
