Bono the builder gets go-ahead for house extension
May 31, 2002

CAMPAIGNING rock star Bono has finally got the go-ahead to build a bigger

The singer faced opposition to his plan to build an extension to his period
home overlooking Killiney beach in Co Dublin, after An Taisce lodged an
appeal to the planning permission granted last November by Dun Laoghaire
Rathdown County Council.

Bono and his wife Ali have now got the green light from An Bord Pleanala for
a three-storey extension to their property on Vico Road.

The plan is to add on two extra bedrooms, a top floor recording studio,
office and utility room to the premises.

The additional rooms will be linked to the elegant three-storey period home
on Temple Hill, Killiney, by an eight-metre glazed corridor.

It will involve the demolition of an existing single-storey side entrance
porch and steps creating a two-storey corridor link.

Bord Pleanala, in its ruling made last Friday, said the proposed development
would not seriously injure the residential amenities of the area or of
property in the vicinity.

The board also ruled the proposal would be in accordance with the proper
planning and development of the area.

This followed an examination of the existing pattern of development in the
area, the size and topography of the site and the design and location of the
proposed extension.

The board, however, attached a number of conditions including a stipulation
that the extension must not be occupied, let or sold as a separate dwelling.

In the interest of public health and to ensure a proper standard of
development the water supply and drainage arrangements, including the
disposal of surface water, must also comply with the requirements of the
local council.
