I'm currently feelin: touched touched
I'm currently hearin: Love Is Blindness - U2

Yea, yea, I know, I haven't been SOTDing like I should be, and I won't even bother with excuses, but I will say that I have a special 3-part SOTD up my sleeve. Unfortunately, I won't be posting it today, as I haven't had the time to watch it (yes, watch, it'll be another live-video SOTD), and do the write up, so instead I have for you:

"Love Is Blindness" from Achtung Baby

I didn't think I'd be SOTDing this, as I was around to comment on it the last time it was covered, but alas, I was listening to it the other night, and I was just overcome by it's beauty. I have more to say about this song, dammit, and so I'm gonna!
Love Is Blindness starts out with 20 seconds of a lone organ (played by Brian Eno, if I'm not mistaken), the sorrow exuded in these first moments is your first clue that the forthcoming song is not going to be a very joyous one.
When the rest of the music comes in, it becomes even more chilling. The bassline is subtle, but vital to the overall feel of the song, the percussion is simple and crisp and perfect for the song. This song has so many layers, and they come together so perfectly that it's difficult to even seperate them into seperate pieces within your mind.
I'm quite a whore for lyric interpretations, and as mentioned in my comment on the previous SOTD, there's one that the song is about terrorism, and it fits, especially considering some of the imagery in the promo video for the song. There's also the more conventional interpretation, that the song is about the breaking down of a relationship (which fits the whole chronological theme of Achtung Baby), personally I think it's both.
Love Is Blindness is one of U2's finest songs. The lyrics are absolutely beautiful in their poetic vagueness. Every bit of the music sends across the perfect colours and emotions for the song. Bono's voice aches with sorrow as he sings, he sounds tired and somewhat in despair as he sings. Take note of how rough his voice is on "without mourning".
Anyone who has read the In Conversation book (again, see the comments of the previous SOTD for quotes) knows what Edge went through playing the solo at the end. And the solo is amazing, but that is not my favourite Edge moment of the song. The riff just after the "that almost makes sense" bit is absolutely painful. I have a very clear memory of listening to this song in bed one night, in the dark, and when Edge played thar riff, I cried out and gasped. It still gives me chills. It's a very dark, and very amazing few seconds of music.
There are some U2 songs which are always better live (WTSHNN) and some which are rarely better live (One), but for me, Love Is Blindness will always be best on Achtung Baby. While writing this, I just popped in the ZooTV Sydney video to compare, and while it's amazingly beautiful (the WOWY-LIB-CHFIL trio is a gut-wrenching thing of beauty), Love Is Blindness almost seems to just drag on toward the end, and the song loses something as a result. Plus my very-favourite-riff is not the same, and the da-da-da-da outro is gone.
Also, it's somewhat annoying that when I have all of my U2 albums in one playlist, they go in alphabetical order, which makes Beautiful Day follow Love Is Blindness. Terrible, terrible, terrible. After having your soul torn open by Love Is Blindness, the last thing you need is "It's a beautiful day! Don't let it get away!" **shakes head** I once threatened to throw my iPod against the wall, seriously. Love Is Blindness is just too amazing to be followed by anything (except for Can't Help Falling In Love, of course).
In conclusion, there are just not enough adverbs in any language to explain how fantastically, wonderfully, amazingly, beautiful this song is. Thankfully the song exists and can speak for itself, to those that listen.

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my heart
Love is blindness

In a parked car
In a crowded street
You see your love
Made complete
Thread is ripping
The knot is slipping
Love is blindness

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my love
Blindness

A little death
Without mourning
No call
And no warning
Baby, a dangerous idea
That almost makes sense

Love is drowning
In a deep well
All the secrets
And no one to tell
Take the money
Honey
Blindness

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my love
Blindness

Favourite lyrics:
Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

One of my favorite songs from Achtung Baby.

I agree on that it should really never be followed by anything. Nothing can top Edge's solo in the end.

i've even cut other songs off the end of boots because it just has to be the last song sung. I remember listening to Achtung Baby for the first time in bed one night too - and yes, this song did the same thing for me.. i can honestly say i had some dreams that night... and until reading the Bono in conversation book, i had always thought it was about bono going through a breakup, i suppose because of how raw his voice was on it. Good choice. i'm going back to bed and taking my ipod with me :)

I too adore the song. Thanks for the writeup. BTW you can fix this iPod alphabetical order issue I think, if you just sort the songs into the order you want them played on your computer and THEN download the playlist to your iPod. You need to be using an actual playlist with all your U2 songs in it, not just telling the iPod to play all the albums by that artist.

My wife and I see this song two different ways. She sees it as the two lovers forgiving and forgetting past offenses and making up (in the parked car, on a crowded street) and deciding to be blind to each other's faults. I see this song as actually being an unhealthy end to the relationship. The lovers are in denail that their relationship is not working (after getting back together). I actually find it quite sad.

It's sexy, though.

LOL! That's too horrible to even think about...

This is my absolute favorite U2 song. Whenever I listen to it, I just feel the most beautiful pain. Hard to explain. Thanks for featuring it.

two tatts (one of which a u2 tat of my own design)

AWESOME! What's it look like?! ;) And whereabouts will you have it?

I'm really wanting to get myself a tat of one of u2's lyrics myself...preferably in Irish Gaelic (just for a unique touch, y'know! :P) and preferably on the inside of my wrist for some bizarre reason. Problem is I've no idea which one to get! My favourite lyric of all time is Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head? from One, but I'm not sure if I want that seared across my skin for the rest of my life! Maybe "a highway with no-one on it" from AIWIY? I'm not sure...:P

Hehe, and I'm also wanting to get a quote from the Bible across my lower back, and a little phoenix on my shoulder! :P Too bad I don't have a great deal in the bank account, or a very high pain threshold! :P

its like a butterfly thing flowers and stuff and certain meanings to the flowers... and inbetween my shoulder blades. I can't wait but im definately going to be very anal about it and it has to be perfect... yeah this is just my first u2 one, theres a lot of other tattoos i like need to get... and tattoos aren't so painful I have two, one of which is on my foot which is one of the most painful places, I mean I have a high pain tollerance when it comes to that kind of pain, but i know people who are just the opposite and they were cool too, i guess what i;m saying, if you want it bad enough, the pain is worth it
