Beautiful Day @ 09:39 pm

canadanne:
I'm currently feelin: thoughtful thoughtful

So I was listening to the radio earlier and a thought occurred to me.

Beautiful Day is alright as an opening track... but does anyone think it would work a lot better as a *closing* track?  I can imagine it sounding really nice at the end of an album. In fact I think that would be the obvious position for it, if I was putting together a tracklist including that song!

I'm inclined to agree, especially because it's such a positive song. A nice way to end things, upbeat.
But I've noticed U2 almost always has a really quiet closing track.

Yes, absolutely!  It'd be a nice optimistic note to end on, a bit like Yahweh. And that outro would be really effective as an album closer, whereas it seems a bit too final when you're only at the end of track 1!

I've always been dissapointed in the order of the songs on that album. They seemed to put all the upbeat songs in the beginning, and all the slow songs at the end. No mix at all.

I like "Beautiful Day" as an opener. "Walk On" would've worked as a closer as well.

Your post is actually related to a board theme that I've had floating in my head for a while, but just haven't had the time to implement. ;)

agreed, walk on is the better closer, grace works better as a b-side in my opinion anyway.

I definitely know what you're saying, Canadanne.
I also think it'd be nice if they had the album close out with a bang (or, at the least, not put "The Big First Single" in lead-off position yet again).

To me, Yahweh actually feels like a bit of a reprise of Beautiful Day (especially in the middle eight)... having one start All That You Can't Leave Behind and the other end How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb, it just seems bookendy to me, like the band has said what they'd like to say in their current, poppier-than-the-past style with those two albums.

That's a very interesting thought! (About the bookending.)
