A U2 survey

I was extremely bored so I wrote a little survey. If anyone else wants to fill it in, you could either post your answers in the comment section here, or post it in your own journal, or both....

Most underrated U2 song: The Refugee is an example of one song that loads of people seem to hate, and I really cannot see any reason for it - I think it's a great song which I loved from the start. As for the most underrated as in under-mentioned song, I guess it would probably be something off Boy, like A Day Without Me. When Connie did her Boy poll, I think I was the only person who voted for that song.

Most overrated U2 song: Mmm, there are a few that I think are a bit overrated. A lot of people make a big fuss about Gone and Walk On and Kite, saying they're the best tracks off the last two albums, and I just don't see what's *so* amazing about them... if I was forced to vote my least favourite tracks off the albums, those would probably be among the first to go!

Most underrated U2 album: Well... I think it'd have to be either Boy or Pop - Boy because it just doesn't seem to get mentioned as a great album very often (which it IS), and Pop because it gets a lot of slagging-off in certain parts of the world, which horrifies me because I think it's a very strong and fun album.

Most overrated U2 album: Probably The Joshua Tree or ATYCLB. TJT always seems to top these Greatest Album Of All Time lists you see in the papers, and it bothers me simply because I think Achtung Baby is much greater and more deserving of that award. As for ATYCLB, that one's had a lot of reviews saying that it's "perfect" and stuff, and that it joins TJT and AB to complete a trio of U2's best albums. I like it, sure, but I certainly don't agree with that. Plus I'm probably a bit resentful of all those "return to form" comments, because I think the 90s stuff was brilliant. ;p

First U2 song you ever heard: I probably heard a few U2 songs in my youth without really noticing them or knowing who recorded them (for example, I'm sure I must have heard One before, because the first time I listened to Achtung Baby I found I already seemed to subconsciously know the chorus of One off by heart). The first U2 song I heard and knew to be U2, though, was probably Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, when I saw the video of it on Top Of The Pops.

First U2 song you heard and loved: Staring At The Sun. I didn't like HMTMKMKM when it came out, because I was a strange child and found the song (and video) disturbing. I also didn't like Discotheque when it came out, and wondered why such a load of old shite was at No1 in the charts. I did quite like Staring At The Sun when I saw it on TOTP, though. The next U2 song I liked was Sweetest Thing. It still took me another year before I had the bright idea of getting a U2 album, though.

All-time favourite U2 song: One can tug at my emotions like no other song, but it has to share pole position with Lemon, which fires up my passions with its sexy falsettoey MacPhistoey lemony goodness.

All-time favourite U2 album: Achtung Baby remains the only album which I loved totally from the very first listen. All the others seemed to have at least a small degree of inconsistency when I first heard them.

First U2 album you owned: Achtung Baby, but I got the Best Of 1980-1990 & B-Sides before that.

U2 albums you haven't got (yet): None. Well... the next one. *g*

Favourite U2 era: ZooTV, and I don't even hesitate for a microsecond to say that. The AB/Zooropa era can never be beaten IMO. It was just so damn FUN. The screens, MacPhisto, The Fly, the music, it was all absolute perfection.

Least favourite U2 era: I dunno really. I enjoy the music from all U2 eras. I guess I'm not always overly interested in the live stuff from the early days, and I'm in the minority that wasn't *that* impressed by the Elevation Tour (mainly because I had terrible seats in a terrible arena). None of the other eras hold the same fascination for me that ZooTV does, anyway.

Well, that was a fairly bland selection of questions, but now I'm tired and can't think of anything else, so I'll stop there. Perhaps someone else could come up with some more (better!) questions, and post a Part 2 to this survey, or whatever....

yo U2 buddies

responding to canadanne's survey reminded me of an old Q magazine i was re-reading yesterday. November2000, it has U2 on the front page, anyway, one of the quotes in bold in the center of a page was from Adam: "Men should be encouraged to look at each other's penises. They needn't be hidden under a bushel" LOL. wtf is he on.

Also, organising my HUGE amount of mp3s the other day, (piracy is bad mmkay) i found a cover of 'with or without you' i hadnt heard before. It's by 'Lanemeyer', and it's just a kind of fast-paced, aggressive, punk-rock version. Blink182-ish. If anyone cares.

If anyone can tell me where I can find cover versions of 'One' please do, as I dont have any. I can remember Craig David and The Lighthouse Family covering it, and someone else im sure, but cant remember who. And if anyone has the show where Craig David was on stage with U2 singing 'One' or at least parts of it. PLEASE tell me where i can get it.

hmmm. an observation and a question.........

I've been on the u2 online fan community for quite a few years. In that time here's two things I've noticed. That most people's favorite album is Achtung Baby, and that they think the Joshua Tree is overrated. I was just wondering who else out there besides me doesn' have that view. personally Joshua Tree is my absolute favorite and I don't think it is one bit overrated. I could write pages about why I think that but I don't feel like it. plus I'd bore you. hehe. :p so question: anyone feel the sameway I do? :)

My survey answers

Most underrated U2 song: Miami. A lot of people hated this song but there was always something I liked about it. It was incredible song live during the popmart tour as well.

Most overrated U2 song: With or Without you. Still one of my favorites but... still overrated.

Most underrated U2 album: Rattle&Hum or Zooropa
The whole R&H project, while widely criticized as too over the top and excessive at the time, and pandered by many, is a great album and film. Yes some of the blues/Memphis stuff is deserving of some slander but Desire and All I want Is you are two of their greatest songs. Zooropa is a classic but many don't like this one very much either.

Most overrated U2 album: The Joshua Tree. It's one of my favorities but I don't think it's anywhere near their best. This has always been the crowd favorite.

First U2 song you ever heard: Sunday Bloody Sunday when I was very young on MTV. I remember watching the video for this from Red Rocks when I was quite young.
First U2 song you heard and loved: Streets. I was old enough then to understand what this band had in them.
All-time favourite U2 song: Stay(Faraway so Close) although several others are right there too.
All-time favourite U2 album: Tie between Achtung Baby and Zooropa. I was so engrossed in U2 at this point in my life. Was also the first tour that I ever saw.

First U2 album you owned: The Joshua Tree

U2 albums you haven't got (yet): Got them all and countless boots of shows.

Favourite U2 era: ZooTV. Achtung Baby and Zooropa. The best.

Least favourite U2 era: I don't think I have one. I liked Pop a great deal and thought it was one of their best tours. But then again, I also felt that way for every tour I've seen.

I was gonna leave this as a comment to m origina post but I decided to post here.

I was just thinking. a lot of people say they like Achtung Baby better because it was a breakthrough musically and stuff. I just wantto share some random thoughts around this...

*I agree that it was a musical breakthrough in a lot of ways. but I've always been bigger on just the feeling in general it gives. whether or not joshua is breakthrough musically I don't know but the musical just sound is the most important thing to me (more important than lyrics or trying news things) and to me the *sound*, the meodies, everything about the Joshua Tree is just the best ever. There is NOTHING that compares to it to me- nothing. I absolutely love every song on that album. That's why I personally thin it's jus the best thing ever.

another thing..

*when I first heard Achtung Baby I was a bit freaked out by it. my first album was the best of. then a few months later I got UF, JT, and AB on the same day. I fell in love with JT right away, I liked UF, but AB freaked me out. I listened to it a few times more and eventually grew to like it (it' now my second favorite). anyways that brings me to my next point....

*everything always says what a different sound AB is. and overall yes it is. but when you listen to all the different parts you can (well I can anyways) point out all the distinct u2ey sounds in there. they've just mixedmixed togetherin this totally different way that makes everythin sound different. I'm sure I'm not the only one who notices this but I've never seen anyone mention it so I though I'd just bring it up.

that is all.

oh just a side note... my fav albums:
#1 Joshua Tree
#2 Achtung Baby
#3 Zooropa

Most underrated U2 song: the fly.

Most overrated U2 song: bullet the blue sky. i think it's good but it doesn't need to dominate shows and best of albums the way it does.

Most underrated U2 album: zooropa. there's damn good stuff on there but no one notices because they associate it with the ostentatiousness of the zoo tv tour.

Most overrated U2 album: joshua tree. everyone loves it, we know that. but i think it's kind of been talked about to death.

First U2 song you ever heard: i still haven't found what i'm looking for. i was in music class in first grade, and my teacher put on joshua tree and played that. he told us to guess the title. everyone guessed stuff like "city walls" and "only to be with you." i was the one that guessed right. when the song was over, he said "these guys are going to be huge. i guarantee it."

First U2 song you heard and loved: even better than the real thing. i don't know why, but i have always loooooooved that. i borrowed my sister's achtung tape when i was in like 7th grade, and i listened to it over and over. ::i have yet to give it back::

All-time favourite U2 song: this is so not an easy question!!!! mysterious ways. bad. exit. desire. angel of harlem. kite....

All-time favourite U2 album: achtung. never ever get sick of it.

U2 albums you haven't got (yet): under a blood red sky, october.

Least favourite U2 era: well..... how about all the stuff i missed????? ;-)
